Absolutely Beautiful

Post by MaxRock on Tue Apr 08, 2008 3:44 pm

scottz,

My family is planning a trip to Silverton this summer. Where is that picture taken? Is it at a public campground? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thanks,
MaxRock

As far as I know there is only one campground in Silverton and that don't look like it. I'd say he was boondocking north of Silverton. I saw a place where you could pull off and camp.

Silverton was a nice place. The drive from Ouray to Siverton is to die for. Quite nice from Silverton to Durango too. I want to go back this year.

That particular place is Cunningham Gulch, one of our favorites. No, it is not a public campground, just good ol' USFS land. There are many places to "boondock" around here. This is the way I like to go, I seldom pull into a campground. I much prefer being out on my own, away from the crowds. Nothing wrong with those that like campgrounds, just not my cup of tea. When we are on our own, Kodiak (the choc lab) can run his legs off and not bother anyone. He is obsessed with catching a whistle pig (big marmont); not sure what will happen if he does, but it will probably be pretty entertaining.

Let me know if you want more info, I can fix you up with a map and point out some great places to camp.

Also, Silverton puts on a great 4th July fireworks show. Amazing for such a small town, but a bunch of people come up for it. The sounds of the fireworks echoing off the mountains is fantastic.

I did some trout fishing in 1994 . The man that had the Grayhound stop took me and had a great time. The people that live in the area treated me great. Love the train ride from Durango to Silverton round trip took around 11 hours.

There is also a narrow gauge train that runs over Cumbres Pass; a couple hours to the east of Durango. Both are nice.

Now I know why you pack a small hardware store in the bottom of the camper. You need it out in the boonies........
