New Album

Post by Glen Schumann on Sun Jun 29, 2008 3:02 pm

I've just posted a few photos in my new Gallery. Not sure they qualify as "cool", but there they are.

Admin,
Glad you like my "deeres", they are the youngest of five (seven counting step daughters). Yours may need a little more time before actually operating that one. None of my girls had the experience of growing up on a farm; all city life for them. At least most of them like to camp!

I grew up on a B, a 50 and a 730 Diesel along with a Ford 8N. Lots of tractor time up to the summer after high school. I still miss the old "johnnie poppers".

Glenn,

I think you have some "cool" looking pictures. How does the Cat perform in the cold, looking at the last picture in the snow. I've always wanted to camp in the snow. But living in N. Texas, there isn't much of a chance of doing that.

That was our first trip with the WC. I was probably overly concerned about how fast we would go through the Propane. Because of that, we kept the thermostat low and supplemented the furnace with a small ceramic heater (electric). We also wore sweats and wool socks. We had also learned while PUP camping how to make the bed very warm and toasty. So we felt we did fine, but many people might have been horrified at 50 defrees F while sleeping and 60 when up and about. We thought we were comfortable and are looking forward to extending our camping season by a couple of months on each end. The next time we are out in that much cold we may use the furnace more.

Windows were drafty and collected a lot of moisture. Keeping the shades down helps with drafts and I used paper towels to wipe down the windows on occassion.

I have noticed during the few really cold mornings we camped, the windows had excessive moisture condensing on them. Like you, we just wiped them down.

On two different occasions, within a week after we left, there was a good 8-10" of snow. It would have been fun to experience it.

I will agree, the furnace can suck down some serious propane when it is really cold outside.

I forgot to mention that I tried running the ceiling fan to circulate the air more. This did seem to help with the moisture a little. The fan was set to draw warm air up and force it out to the sidewalls.

Although we don't get as cold as you do in the interior, we do get snow even on the coast on N Washington near the Canadian Border and have camped with snow on ground.
Best way we have dealt with the sweating walls on sliders and on windows in winter is to 1. Use bathroom vent during showers and cooking pasta, 2. Buy a room sized dehumidifier and set to run most of time. The dehumidifier besides pulling moisture out of the air, it throws out a little heat.
3. When I ran it in the bedroom before setting up a more permanent intall with a drain hose out the camper, it was enough heat to not need heat in the bedroom at night.
Keep in mind this is temps no lower than 20 outside. I am originally from Minnesota and don't think this all works below zero.
