DP Tuner

Post by scottz on Thu Jun 05, 2008 4:56 am

Update on the DP Tuner I installed a few months ago. This is the best chip I have used so far (I've had three). The performance and tunes are great. The only issue I have at this point is the way my transmission shifts when pulling the cat (it is fine when empty). When pulling the cat (heavy load), if I let it shift at moderate RPM's, about 2000, it shifts very hard, as in, knock your teeth out hard. If I keep my foot in it a little harder and make it run up to about 2500 RPM, the shifts are much better. They are fine tuning another chip for me and will send it to me on an exchange basis when it is ready. If that does not help, I plan to have it live tuned in Denver the end of July. Live tuning is when Jody spends about four hours in your truck (with & without the trailer) with his computer fine tuning everything.

Anyway, my point is, the DP tuner is a fine product and has excellent support. I purchased mine from John Wood when he did my transmission. Both John and Jody (who manufacturers the chip and designs the programs) have been working with me to solve any issues.

I agree completely. I have the handheld SCT Xcal2 programmer with his tunes. I am working on getting my tow tunes updated to the high altitude variants. I also want to try out the 80 HA tow. We're playing phone tag now.

I worked with Jody to adjust parameters on my tunes when I first got it a couple years ago. With the Xcal2, he simply emailed me the changes and I uploaded them first to the Xcal then to the PCM.

The tow programs seem to like they want to snap drivetrain components under light throttle. Under high loads, they seem to work fine but you have to be in the higher RPM band.

I got my high altitude tunes from DP yesterday. I haven't driven it yet, but I imagine it will be similar to what I am used to. With all the live tuning he does, I get the benefit of the updates from those sessions since I got the tunes a couple years ago. I got the 40 AND 60 HA Tow and the 80 HA economy. I didn't know he had the 80 in HA until I talked with him.

John told me that the HA tunes just keep the truck from smoking too much at altitude. I have not experimented with them yet. I'm waiting for a chip with revised tunes to arrive to smooth out my shifting. I'm scheduled for live tuning in Denver the end of July; I'll detour through there on my way back from Oregon/Idaho (assuming I can still afford fuel). Just paid $5.06/gal.

So far, the power and mpg has been great on our 6.0
When our warranty runs out in 2011 I will get a tuner, because I agree that there is no such thing as to much power. Ford

Definitely less smoke and a better pull characteristics. So far I haven't set the p1211 like I did with the old 2006 version of the Econo tune. I haven't run the 40 or 60 yet.

It's around $4.77 at the cheap stations, and $4.89 everywhere else for #2. About 6 miles from the house there is a biofuel station that has B20 for $4.65. I may give it a try once I buy a spare fuel filter to have on hand.

I've got a DP in my truck. Love it! I've got the stock, high idle, 40 tow, 80 tow, 80 econo, and 120. Just towed the 5er for the first time since I got the chip, what a difference, WOW! If you don't have one, get one! You will not be disapointed.

I hope y'all don't mind a DMax guy joining in your thread. I am going to comment on running bio-diesel. I try to fill up at truck stops whenever possible. There are two about 7 miles from my house that use to sell B20. The first time I used it, about 5 miles from the station, you could hear the engine quiet down. The engine just seemed to run smoother. But there is a downfall for the first time users...after my 3rd tank, it clogged my fuel filter. Changed it and on my way.

As of Jan-07, Texas, in their infinite wisdom, outlawed bio-diesel. There was a big push to reverse this decision and thankfully it passed. The only thing is the stations can only sell B5. It still seems to provide the additional lubricant the ULSD seems to be missing.

I recommend giving it a try & let me know what you think.

maxrock, I'm with ya on the engine running qiute I run the B20 when I can I also like like the lube I didn't have the trouble with the fuel filter though. My truck runs great on the bio I would tell anyone to try it at least once. It doesn't seem to affect any performance either I usually run the extra 75 horsepower when I'm not towing, but when I'm towing I use the 40 horsepower with no problems.

I believe the fuel filter issue has a lot to do with the mileage on the truck. The more dino-diesel you've run through it, the more stuff the bio will clean. I haven't had a filter issue since the first time.

I agree on the performance comment. I don't see negative performance (mileage or seat of the pants acceleration) nor any performance benefit, but the engine seems to like it better.

I have a 14HP Yanmar diesel garden tractor. I run 1 gal. of well filtered WVO (used to fry turkeys at Thanksgiving) to four gals of dino-diesel. The Yanmar really likes that. I don't have the stones to put the WVO in my DMax.

I've ran one quart of two-stroke oil in a tank of fuel for a while now just because I'm not to sure on the lube of the ulsd fuel seems to do the same as the biodiesel as far as the lubed but I haven't ran any of the other home remedies that I've read about on some of the other forums.

I think Jody (DP) has some Edge Evos that he can flash with his tunes that include the digital gauges.

You can also ask him to flash some tunes on a X3 Power Flash. Gauges cost me $300 in 2001 when I first bought them. The next big thing is a scan gauge. Terminator Engineering has a Scan Gauge that can read codes and PIDs and display them. You'd have to talk to Joey there and find out if the pyro probe can be monitored. I know it reads trans temp and boost. It sells for $239.

I've got 300 in gauges. 400 in exhaust. 30 for intake. 70 for tranny cooler. and 450 in the chip. You could get by with the gauges and chip but I would not do the chip without the gauges. My exhaust temps blow past 1300 really fast with the higher tunes. I would never know without the gauges. Trans temps can climb pretty fast too, especially when towing don't forget about that. It took me a couple years to build up to what I've got.
