For those with Fords ::::

Post by Admin on Sun Apr 06, 2008 4:48 am

For those with fords , I got tons of information about different problems from the Diesel Stop Forum web site. They cover any year model ford diesel ........

Problems I ran into already. Bought my truck used , 2001 Ford F350 SRW 7.3 PSD.,,,,,,,,
Front hub wheel bearing. Its a sealed bearing on the 4x4's like mine. You have to buy the whole hub, comes with vacuum hookup for the shift on the fly dash switch.

Changing the oil to 10w30 in the winter worked wonders for starting it up on Really cold mornings. I run 15w40 in summer.

When you take off you could feel a Clunk in the rear end. Come to find out that the Drive shaft needed packed with grease toward the rear of the shaft where it joins the short shaft that goes to the rear end. Theres a boot over that section, and it has no grease fittings. Repack it with grease and the clunk is gone.

Cam Position Sensor-TAKEN

Post by keithbennett on Sun Apr 06, 2008 1:46 pm

I had a 7.3 before my current truck and I got a spare CPS - if anyone needs one - it's free to a good home. Drop me an email and I'll send it out. This has been spoken for.

Regards,

Keith

We have a 06 F350 srw,4x4,3.73,sc manual trans, that we ordered from the factory. We only have 11,000 miles on it now, so we have not had any trouble yet. Our trip in April will be about 10,000 plus miles and taking about three to four months, so we will keep you posted if we have any problems on the way. We hope not, but you never know.

I've been around thedieselstop since 2000 so I can offer my opinions too. My brother is also a Ford Diesel tech at the local shop. He works on a lot of trucks (mostly 6.0L), some 7.3L for various problems and not many 6.4 except for the radiant and reflash updates.

I bought my truck new in 2000 as a graduation gift to myself (MS in Civil Engineering). It's just under 8 years old and at 78000 miles.

I've been at TDS since 2004, same user name. Great sight with tons of great information, but the new format is very ad heavy.

My 7.3 has been bullet proof; love the power and reliability. I know, it can't hang with a 6.4 or a Duramax (it took a few mods for it to be able to keep up with a 6.0), but it works for me.

The best part: NO PAYMENTS!

For those of you who may have purchased a 1997-2003 7.3 PSD there has been a recall on the Cam Position Sensors for those truck engines. It has taken many people from a number of forums complaining to the NTSB... my bad, the letter says " Ford Motor Company has decided"... but it is finally a reality that they will replace those CPS's with an improved one at their cost (parts and labor). It is Recall number 07S57. They will need your VIN number when you call your dealer and they will require you to bring it in for inspection. The letter even goes on to say that if you have paid to remedy this situation you "may" be eligible for a refund if you have a receipt. This is a safety recall so it should apply even if you are not the original owner. They requested it be checked to ensure that you have the latest sensor available. My letter came in January 2008 so it is a relatively new recall and I had replaced mine previously, but they still replaced mine.

Maybe we can all quit carrying a spare CPS and replacement instructions around in our trucks.

I had mine replaced under the recall and it works fine. However, some are having trouble with their truck running rough with the new sensor. I still carry one of the old ones and the tools to change it. There is a ton on information on this subject at TheDieselStop.com

I had IDM problems in 2003 and they replaced my IDM and CPS under warranty. I got a spare in the glove box. My brother dumped his 2002 for a 2008 and gave me his spares. I'm going to take it in eventually and get the part only. Why fix what isn't broke? Especially since they new part has had its share of problems on a handful of trucks. I remember reading a thread on TDS.com a month or two ago. I can't remember what ever happened.

Yeah, I lost interest because mine is running good with the new CPS. If I have problems, I'll get interested again.

I have a 2008 Job 1 Ford (built Jan 2007), see sig for details. Love that truck, nothing says bring on the hills like 650 lb-ft of twist and 4.10 gears! Of course with this increase in power comes a decrease in mileage, not to mention the new emissions equipment, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I get about 9.5 MPG towing on the freeway, truck weighs about 9k lbs and the loaded trailer about 10k lbs, Scaled it out on a CAT scale. Wink Get about 14.5 MPG empty on the freeway.

mattebury, I looked at a new one recently and sure like a lot of things on the new super duty, especially the no waiting on glow plugs. I freaked when the salesman just put the key in and cranked. Really nice truck I know you are proud.
