I-75 > I-16 > DeRenne Ave. > Harry S. Truman Pkwy. > Whitfield Ave. > Diamond Causeway----These are the instructions from the State Park Web Page. GPS gives a little different route, but I think I will stick with these, as some of the streets shown on GPS has some low hanging tree limbs along the route. Never been there, so if anyone has a better set of directions, would appreciate the info. From here we will take I-95 to exit 29 (I think) to US 17. Been there lots of times. As for the cold weather----no problem. We are cold weather campers!!

Won't be there. Been there, fall of 2006. There's a squirrel about every 8 feet since there's a tree every 8 feet. No, not really it's more like 15' for both. I will say the roads were really bouncy because of tree roots uplifting the road. At least on the loop where they put us and it made for an interesting ride out to the arterial road. As I recall we had water/electricity on a pull through, there's a dump station we used on leaving. All in all it was a nice place and we enjoyed it.

EZ,
Looks like you are going to go past Phillips house(ADMIN) If you are planning on stopping around Milledgeville, GA. I'm sure Phillip can suggest some GREAT CG's.

You'll be within 30 miles of me when you come through macon,Ga

Its gonna be in the teens here and on J-island this weekend. I hope you have the blizzard pack on your camper. I was parked next to a guy with a FR-cardinal this weekend at the race and his had the artic pack insulation and his water still froze, they had the heat wide open all weekend and it still wasn't thawed out sunday afternoon and that was in the high 20's.

Over the past few years we have camped several times with temps down in the teens without any problems. What I do is fill the fresh water tank, leave a 150W bulb in an aluminum reflector in the basement (along with a small fan), use a combination of the furnace and an electric heater, and so far have never had anything freeze. I also carry a long heat tape and slip-on insulation if I don't have to run the water hose very far. But a lot of the state parks will come around and cut the water off if temps are going to be way down. Also, if DW isn't in a "keep me warm mood", we have an electric mattress warmer on the bed---JUST IN CASE!!!!

Sounds like you've got it down to a science. I'd think you'd have the run of the place. Take your bikes, Jekyll has the best bike trails in the state of Ga. Callaway Gardens would be the 2nd best.

ezrider6298,
My wife and I where at Skidaway over the weekend. It's a great park. Be sure and do all the walking trails....you can bike the longest trial (3.3 miles). I really enjoyed the park and will return soon. It is only 1.5 hours from my home so it's a short drive for us.

I would suggest you take a different route. Take 75 to 16. 16 to I-95 and go South. Drive 4 miles and take Hwy 204 east into Savannah. (you will see the Harley dealership on the right and a McDonalds on the left. Stay on 204 (which turns into Abercorn St) You will pass Bass Pro Shops on your left and then Best Buy, also on your left. After you pass Best Buy, get into the right lane and turn right onto Montgomery Cross Roads. (you will see a Skidaway Island State Park sign on the right about 100 yards before Montgomery Cross Rd) Continue on Montgomery until you come to Waters Ave, turn right (look for Little Ceazers Pizza) It's a straight shot to the park from there. One note, stay in the left hand lane on Waters Ave...it forks about 2 miles from the park and you don't want to go to the right. Try and make it before 4:30pm The directions you listed will take you thru town....I don't think you want to do that. When you leave, just go back the way I have listed and go south on 95 to Jekyll.

Important Footnote: About 2 miles from the park is a Kroger grocery store....they bake GREAT apple pies!!

Have a great trip.

Thanks for the info! This is the route I will take. It is almost identical to my truck GPS route. The TomTom route is somewhat different. Been a while since I have been in that part of Savannah, but I distinctly remember the low limbs on Victory Dr. I was at Ft. McAlister a few weeks ago, but everyone says Skidaway is nicer (although I did not find anything not to my liking, I just want to visit one that I have not tried before) And again, thanks for the info!!!!

We may see you. We are in Walterboro SC and headed SOUTH. Still cold, but we always stop at Skidaway so we can make a praline run to Savana. Just look for the Wildcat with the occupants with earmuffs and BIG Smiles!

We are loaded up and ready to head out in the am for Skidaway. Mixture of snow and ice falling here now, but I don't think it will be enough to cause any problems.

We passed up Georgia in lieu of warm sunny Apopka, Florida! Oh yes, we are sitting here with outside temperature of 34. The good news is that we will become a part of history as the temperature dips to 27 this evening. We have our trusty Lasko heater warming the trailer as we are saving propane in case of a power outage. We are booked here in Wekiwa State Park until Friday the 15th at which time we will head south to Collier-Seminole State Park; that is if we don't freeze first! Happy Trails! (Honey, have you seen my snow shoes?)

Frank L you should be happy that you are not in Pensacola, FL at the present time it is 24 degrees and wind chill 14. This is the first time in 24 years we have been this cold on the Gulf of Mexico.

A little History about Skidaway Island Sp. At one time it was own by Union Camp Corporation. Which was a large paper company. They own forest land up and down the southern east coast. At one time they were rated the 9th largest land owner in the USA. They Donated several large tracts of land to become state parks and federal parks. Skidaway Island State Park was one and The Great Dismal Swamp (federal) in Virginia was another of many Land donations that Union Camp Corporation owned.
In 1999 Union Camp was bought out by International Paper. They sold all the other land and have shut down several Mills and paper machines and saw mills and sent jobs over seas.

We had two great nights there, temps down into the mid 20's, had dinner with an long time friend from high school (Loves' Fish Camp, highly recommend it). Sitting here now at Jekyll Island, temp currently at 32 at midnight, but supposed to improve over the next few days.
