Nevada, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado

Post by scottz on Tue Jul 29, 2008 4:21 am

Yep, really made the rounds the last two weeks. Had a good time and spent a lot of money on fuel; drove about 3200 miles. We averaged 10Mpg running 65-70. Diesel was 4.69 to 5.12. Cat and Truck performed flawlessly. Tires on the truck not so great. I knew I should have replaced them before we left, but I thought I could get another 5k or so out of them. Had a blow out at 10pm on I-86 just west of Pocatello. Put the spare on and spent the night in Idaho Falls. I decided to replace all the tires but it took until about 2pm to find the right ones and get them on. Everything else went smooth.

Glad to hear about the great trip!! I am currently trying to get that last 5k out of my tires, and wouldn't you know it, I put a rock through one Friday.

scottz,

That has to be kind of scary to blow a tire while pulling the 5er. Glad you and your family were not injured and y'all had a great trip.

Brad,

Better to have the tire go while close to home. Much more convenient than it happening on the road.

We have to keep an eye on all of the tires.

The scary part was changing it at night. Glad I had flares and triangles with me.

Scott,

Was the blown tire on the driver or passenger side?

I don't have either flares or triangles...I did, but someone thought they needed that truck worse than I did. I haven't bought new ones to replace those.

Thankfully, it was passenger side. I would recommend triangles. The flares did not last nearly long enough. When I bought them, I thought "this is a waste, I'll never use them". Now I would recommend everyone have a set. It was worrisome enough that I had my wife and dog get out of the truck and stand well off the road while I worked.
As a side note; the rear lights on the Cat are not very bright, have to work on that. I have put several reflector strips on mine (back, sides, front and back of slides when out) and glad I had those too.

I wonder if LED replacement bulbs would be brighter than the bulbs that are in the stop lights?

More like a pass through. Salt Lake --Winemucca --Denio then to Oregon.

That is the most boring section of road. I went hunting up in NE Oregon and headed up that way (Winnemucca to Denio). That is when I tested the WC at 75-80mph and got 9.5 mpg.

Yeah, that is where we tested the governor on my wife's car one year. Found out it is set at 115; held it there for about an hour. My cat seldom sees 70; just a little too heavy to mess around with.
