Trip to New Mexico

Post by ezrider6298 on 10/29/2008, 7:36 am

DW and I are in the early stages of planning a trip from our home in Georgia to New Mexico, sometime next spring. We have made several long trips alone, but thought it might be better if we had another couple with like interests to join us, someone who also wants to make such a trip, but would feel better with a "caravan" buddy. We are in our 60's, don't travel with kids, prepare most all our meals at camp, and are looking for a couple with a similar profile, with either a 5ver, TT, p/up, or MH. We are both Christians, but are not "pruddish" when it comes to a glass of wine or something a little stronger (wink). If interested, email me at ewalker7@bellsouth.net and we will see what develops.

What time next spring?

Do you have a specific destination in mind?

how long do you plan on being on the road?

I'm flexible. Don't want to go so early that I might encounter any bad weather (ice) out that way, and don't want to wait until it is too hot. I want to go to spend at least a few days visiting Albuquerque and Santa Fe, with a visit to Loretta's Chapel to see the staircase. From here to there is around 1500 miles, and we don't travel more than 300 miles a day tops, usually in the 250 range. Like to get an early start each day so that I can stop mid afternoon. Don't like to pull/set up after dark. Probably looking a a 2 week+ trip.

The trip sounds very interesting and your travel profile is almost identical to ours. Unfortunately we have a trip planned to Egypt next March so I doubt that we will have the money for a long trip next spring.

If you’re going to see the “Miraculous Staircase” at the Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, you might also consider visiting “El Santuario de Chimayo” in Chimayo, NM. Called by many the Lourdes of America, it’s about 30 miles north of Santa Fe. The sanctuary, church, and the surrounding grounds are worth the drive IMHO. Along the route is “Camel Rock” and a number of Indian Casinos.

I’d post some pictures but I can’t even figure out how to join Serving.com so instead I put a couple of pics of the church in my user album.

I second the visit to Chimayo. If you decide to come a little further, let me know. I can recommend many places you might want to visit in NW New Mexico, SW Colorado, or NE Arizona. I live in NW New Mexico, you can put me down for a contact if you need anything. We can trade numbers when things firm up.

EZ,

OK, couple more questions,

You say in the spring, would that be around march or April?

what road do you plan on using, I-10, I-40? or what?

Are you members of Coast 2 coast, or Passport America or any of the camping clubs? We are C2C & PPA.

You said 2+ weeks, is that for the whole trip? or the time you want to stay in NM?

By spring, I mean probably mid to late April. The route is flexible, as is the length of stay. I would want to stay in the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area for at least five days, and then a week or so each way in travel. Don't want to make "killer" days driving, even spending two nights at some of the stopovers. No res anywhere except at destination. We usually get a fairly early am start, then around noon check ahead for a stopover spot. The only memberships we currently have are Good Sam and KOA. Had PPA at one time for a couple of years, but did not renew. It might pay me to join again, even just for this trip.

Sounds like a great trip. You will be close to Moab Utah, and Bishop California. You might want to check both places out since you are out this far.

We were in NM awhile back and saw the staircase, very interesting. I would also think about the train ride in Chama NM. Chama is north west corner I think. Have to ck on that one. It is a nice ride. You have two choices 1/2 day or full day. The full day takes you to Antinio in Colorado. I may have my spelling wrong . Anyhow we liked the trip narrow guage RR and half way there was lunch . Also there is Carlbad caverns, that's nice also. WE stayed at a park north of Carlsbad. Can't remember the name but it set back off the road near a large lake. That was nice too. Really camping in the west at that park. I'll see if I can find the name of that one. I think it was about 25miles north of Carlsbad. Elmer1 I see yo are c2c also. We'll have to talk sometime. Gotta run , wish we could join the trip but have other plans this Spring.. Have a nice trip. Laughing

that campground I was thinking of in NM north of Carlsbad is Brantley Lake. It's in your trailer life directory. We really liked the CG. It sets back 4miles off the road. Reminds you of a bunch of covered wagons gathered together. Anthow have a nice trip.. lol!
