Lube It Or Lose It
Under this heading, there was a letter & response in the newest Trailer Life, Action Line column regarding a PullRite Superglide hitch. The hitch failed, dropped the 5'er on the owner's truck and then onto the ground causing about $8,000 in damage to the TV and the 5'er. The owner blamed the hitch and the PullRite manufacturer, Pulliam, and asked TL Action Line to try and get restitution for him.
After Pulliam's engineers reviewed the claim, Pix that the owner had taken and the hitch (the article was not clear on that detail) they determined that the hitch failure was caused when "the cam assembly siezed in place as a result of galling. Galling is a condition where excessive friction is incurred by an unlubricated or poorly lubricated metal surface."
They blamed the galling on the owners failure to lubricate the hitch per the owners manual. Their resolution to this was to offer the owner a new hitch and to pay for the installation of it. This would result in a $1,600 credit at the dealers toward the work already done. It doesn't say whether the owner accepted Pulliam's offer.
So, I guess the lesson here (for me at least) is to make sure that all of the lube points on my hitch (a Husky) are lubed once a year. You guys with a PullRite Superglide may want to review your owner's manuals if you haven't done so already.

Re: Lube It Or Lose It
I would think if the jaws are closed and the pull handle locked in place on a Reese that it wouldn't come loose. Unless one side of the jaws broke ? ,,,,,
From the looks of the pullright it has one collar that slides around the pin.
I like the reese with the jaws just like on a Big Rig. I pulled over the road thousands of miles pulling heavy weight and never saw a big rig 5th wheel fail. Except by driver error, Don't ask me how I know.
I'm bet'n the guy didn't check his connection.
