Discolored window molding

Post by Maxtor on Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:26 am

Around the window on the entrance door is some plastic molding. Our WC is a little more than one year old, and the last time we used it was last June. At that time our molding was nice and white, but now it is discolored. I used some oil eater cleaner that helped, but it is not white. The morning sun hits that side of the WC.
Anyone else have the same problem? Solutions?

Ours is yellowing also......

When I get sick of looking at it, I plan to pull the trim off and paint it.

lol!

If yellowing is a sign of old age, I would be orange.

I think I will mask off the molding and paint it. I will take some before and after pictures. First I need to find some paint that will match the WC and will adhere to plastic. I will check with our local WC dealer.

The wife has used a bleach pen on the back windows with good success. I did notice the other day that molding on the door is very yellow along with the molding around the nose cap.

I went to see the dealer today and see if he had a solution. He says that the outside molding is plastic and sells for $8.67 and comes in three colors. He suggests that we replace the white molding with black because the black never fades. Another option is to paint the molding with white or black paint. He stocks the moldings because he says that sooner or later the tabs that hold up the window will break, and the window will fall down a few inches until it stops at the screws that hold the molding in. At that point he sells the molding. He says that if you look at the inside of the door, you will see some screws that connect the inside molding to the outside molding. If you take the outside molding off to paint it, be careful not to let the widow fall out and break. Looks like a project that I will be doing in the near future. I might paint it white and see what it looks like, and if it does not look good, paint it black and be done with it. Black or white would like better than yellow.

On my previous TT that I did a rebuild on, I encountered several yellowed plastic parts, such as the bathroom sink, interior A/C shroud, outside refridgerator shroud, etc. I simply removed them, cleaned the surfaces with an all purpose cleaner, wiped them down good with alcohol, (I used the rubbing kind as opposed to the good stuff), and painted everything with white Krylon paint. Worked great, and everything was still bright white the day I sold it. I noticed that my window trim too is starting to yellow, so I think I am going to do like Maxtor suggested, mask it off and paint it.

Now that I think about it, I have an entire storage door that is changing colors. It is the big door on the front, right side. I don't think the other doors are doing this. Anyone notice this?

I would think they would cover that under warranty.

The last time camping I was looking at a new model 'Cat. All the window trim was black and looked sharp. Since my trim is turning yellow also, I was thinking of painting it black, kinda match the new campers a bit more.

I agree, it looks very sharp. What about around the door window, is it black also?

Good point, didn't think about the door trim. I'll have to do some research on-line, or maybe someone with an 08-09 Cat can chime in and let us know the color of the door trim.

The door trim is white............or yellow as my case may be.
I don't think it would look bad black though...

I had some leftover plastic prep spray from when I painted my 3-pod gauge pillar. I got it an auto paint supplier. It removes the residue from the plastic prior to painting, but does not remove the discoloration. After the prep, I painted most of the yellowing moldings and plastic doors back to a nice white. I'm still in the process, but the rest will wait until next year. It looks 100% better.

jetskier...

I have the same stuff left over from painting my gauge pods. I was planning on using some 0000 steel wool then the plastic primer, but am leaning towards black vs. white. I guess I'll have to make the color decision before I get started.

You could try laying some black electrical tape over the places where the moldings go to see how it would look in black.

I prefer the white.

That's a great idea...I'll let you know how that turns out. Unfortunately, my DW has a list a half mile long of things I need to do around the house before it gets too cold, so this may turn into a spring project.

Many of the new wildcats and other makes are going to black. You can see them at your local dealer, and get an idea if you like them or not.

Agreed...I saw a late model Wildcat at our last camping trip. The windows were tinted and the molding was black. I thought it looked sharp and that is where I got the idea to paint the trim on my Cat black.

I ordered my '06 with the dark glass, and it came with all the trim black except the entrance door window.
