Ford F250/F350 oil/fuel maintenance

Post by Carpe Diem on 9/28/2008, 2:37 pm

Got around to changing oil and fuel filters on my F350. Just thought I would drop a note to those that like to save a buck. For those that didn't know, you local IH dealer usually carries the fuel filter and oil filter for your 6.0 liters. The part numbers are:

Oil Filter Kit (gasket inc.) - #1840752C91

Fuel Filter Kit - #1847170C92 (or #1847170C93)

Drain Plug - #2589259C91

Fuel filter cap - #1843057C92

Pretty easy to do on your own if you don't already. The fuel filters take a 36mm socket that I obtained from ebay for less than $10. You use the same socket for the oil filter. I think I paid $34 for the fuel filter's vs. $90 from the local stealership. The oil filter was $18. The drain plug isn't necessary, but makes the job easier the next time. The fuel filter cap is just in case you tighten the cap too tight from the last change. I over tightend the upper fuel filter cap the last time I changed them and broke the cap the other day when I attempted to get it off. I had to order the new cap from IH and it was $13 vs. $60 the stealership wanted. I had to use a screw driver and hammer to help the old one off affraid Here are a few pics of the fuel filters. Sorry I didn't get any of the oil filter or drain plug.

Carpe,

Gino's Garage (deals exclusively in Dodge/Cummins stuff) sells what they call a "Boondocker Box". It contains a fuel filter, a belt and other sundry goodies that can regularly go wrong on the road and that are easy fixes. Alot of Dodge oil burner guys also carry a spare lift pump (the kind that mounts on the fuel filter) which is a recognized problem for Dodge diesel owners. Those of us that have the in-tank lift pump have had few problems with that though.

I do agree that the dealers rip us off on the cost of parts. : buzzcut: I'd love to know what their cost is. Clint

For the 7.3L diesel, you can get Motorcraft FL-1995 at walmart for $9.95

I am hoping with the new 6.4 and the future 6.7L coming soon, that the prices of 6.0L maintenance items will go down a little. I won't hold my breath though. Laughing

It's probably not going to happen on the 6.0 stuff. The 7.3L PSD was around since mid '94, I'm not sure about the pre 94 non-idi 7.3L used the same filter or not. Quantity is key. Since the 6.0 only ran from 03-07. I don't know if they will drop the prices that much over time.

It's good you posted this. It reminded me that I need to get a new fuel and air filter.

My brother is the 6.0/6.4 tech at the dealership and I get his employee pricing (cost + 10%) on all parts. It's nice to get the OEM parts rather than NAPA or whatever. I just replaced my front wheel/bearing assemblies (list $350, my cost $250 each side). I did the labor as it's an easy 2 hour job. It was 2pm on the friday before our Labor Day camping trip and he was already out camping. At 5 pm we were packed and on the road with the WC to the lake. I wouldn't want to have towed in the condition the bearing was in. It was completely shattered and metal was everywhere. This happened over about a 3 day period and about 100 miles (started by squeaking).

I only wish I was connected worthy I guess I will have to stick to deciphering the IH and ford part numbers. So far I have saved a bunch visiting my local IH dealer. Looks like that marriage will end though with the new 6.7L.

Hi Phillip,

Yes, check engine light came on on Sunday. Monday morning went to Beach Ford in Virginia Beach and they took us right in. They said the fuel gauge was stuck on full, and the EGR valve was gummed up. They reprogrammed the fuel gauge computer and replaced the EGR.

Fuel gauge filter??????

EGR, yes, truck runs much stronger now.....
