Re: TC's in the "hood"
Well, I'm in the resource room at the hospital to see whether I can type or not since I had a mild stroke on Monday. It seems as though reading comprehesion and trouble talking without stuttering is all the damage it caused that I know of so far. Some more testing before they let me go home (maybe tomorrow). I will be back here of the forums again when I get back home.
Talk to you all then...

TCs BACK in the "hood"
Hey gang, I'm back!!
Come to find out I have a hole in my heart that didn't close up at birth. Doc says that 15 to 25% of the population has the same thing. Most can go their entire lives without any problems or even knowing they have the genetic condition. Since they can't tell me specifically whether it was a clot or just a narrowing in a blood vessel, they concluded the most likely culprit was a clot from a leg traveled to the right side of my heart, jumped over to the left side through the hole and took the fast train to my brain. Fortunately it was a small stroke and the damage is minimal. The neurologist is expecting a complete recovery in time. All my motor skills are in tact. I still have good muscle strength in all extremities. No paralysis anywhere. The only things effected were my speech and my reading/reading comprehesion skills. I am still reading much slower that I normally would, but the comprehension seems to be back. A little dyslexic when typing (that God for spell check). But I still have a stutter like you wouldn't believe! They initially asked me if I normally talk like I do now. They could only appreciate the true difference when my DW told them I use to be on the radio. Even at that, the speech should clear up in time, but for now, it sure is a struggle to keep from tripping all over my words. Carrying on a lengthy conversation is exhausting!
I want to thank those who put me in their thoughts and prayers. I truly believe each prayer got me that much closer to being normal again. Or as normal as I can be.

Hi TC,
THATS WONDERFUL NEWS!!!!!!!
Be sure to follow through with all your therapy. My father-in-law thought he only needed to do his therapy when they came out and made him do it. As a result, he didn't recover the way he should have. So be sure to DO IT, DO IT, DO IT...

TC you got some wonderful news. Rember to take that little 81mg Asperin. I take one every day for blood thinner. I am sure the DW will keep you on the streight road.

Re: TC's in the "hood"
Thanks gang for all the kind words and encouragement.
I will agree... I was very fortunate indeed!!
The Doc has me on an aspirin as well as plavix for now. Will be switching over to coumadin in a week or so. BTW, did anybody know that coumadin is rat poisin??
So are they trying to cure me or kill me!
I still need to address the hole between the left and right sides. I was told the typical defect has an opening about 1 mm wide, and mine is 4 1/2 mm! All things being relative, that's pretty big and increases the likelihood of letting more stuff thru to the right side. Will be talking to a heart Doc on the 2nd to figure it all out. They typically repair these things in the same way they do a catheterization, so it should be done outpatient. That won't be so bad.

Re: TC's in the "hood"
Just an update on the "hole". Went into the hospital yesterday morning early. Had the hole surgically repaired using a device which looks very much like umbrella tops covering each side of the hole. An overnite stay for observation, and I'm back home this evening. Some pain in groin and will have to stay on Plavix and a baby aspirin for 6 mths. After that, just a baby aspirin as long as I live.
Again, thanks to all who kept me in their thoughts and prayers.

Re: TC's in the "hood"
Sounds as though the surgical procedure went well. Does this mean you don't have to stay on the coumadin? The baby aspirin is a lot better than the coumadin, so I hope thats the case. At any rate, glad to hear everything is working out.
