Spare tire relocated

Post by scottz on 8/15/2008, 2:29 pm

I removed my spare tire from the rear bumper and put it under the cat between the landing gear. Link to photos in my signature.

It was rather difficult to get it up there; used a floor jack. So, it won't be real user friendly on the road, but should not be hard to get down, just difficult to get back up. I thought about buying one of the little spare tire hoists like there is under the back of my Ford; maybe later.

But isn't a Yokohama Geolander a Truck / SUV tire and not specifically for a trailer is what I'm asking.

Yes, I'm running LT tires; and feel a lot better than I did with what FR put on it.

See photo: Two pieces of 1/2" threaded rod. Drilled 1/2" holes through the angle piece on the rear of the front compartment. Bolted the threaded rod to the compartment. Bolted the tire up using locking nuts.

Scott,

When removing the tire, do you just unbolt it and manhandle it to the ground or is there another solution?

Another thing I love about my 29BHBP, the spare is located in the backpack, out of the way and out of the sun.

Have not had to do it yet, but that is the plan. Actually I'm going to try to get the wife to do it! Shhhhhh!

Actually my wife would probably do it, if I let her. The plan is, if I ever need to use it, to "man handle" it down and worry about putting it back up later when I have a floor jack.

I have not looked at the Ford tire hoist too close, but I don't think it will work. On the pick up, the hoist is mounted to a frame member and has space above it. This space is where the handle goes in to operate the hoist. If I mounted the hoist flat against the underside of the cat, there would be no way to get the handle in. Still thinking.

hello all, i just found out about this site and this is my first time in, in regards to mounting your spare tire i did the same thing but i ordered a set up off of a 08 dreamscape that they use for only $26 because they doe'nt have rear bumpers, it only requires that you drill 2 holes to mount the cable mechinism and 1 hole up front for a eye bolt (sold seperate) to hold the rod in place that that is turn buy the handle, down side was the handle is cheap so i welded a socket on the end that matched the rod that leads to the cable mechinism. ( works just like taking the spare down from under the truck) oh yea you have to place two spacer blocks app.2" thick for the tire to hit that allows the rod to bypass

I thought about doing the same thing with the Ford spare tire winch, but I never priced it. I didn't think about spacing the spare down to make room for the handle. If I got one of the Ford units, it would use the same handle as my truck.

Spare tire relocated

Post by bert and hap on 4/15/2009, 12:32 pm

Just to let y'all know, the spare tire winch from under the Ford Ranger works great. We added it to our Baby this past weekend. Took about an hour to do. Had to modify the rim holder a bit, but other than that it was a snap. I will post some pics if anyone is interested.

Kevin,

Please post some pics...we like seeing pics! My Cat has the backpack and the spare is located inside. However, when we upgrade to an adult Cat (rear living room, no bunkhouse), I would be interested in installing a winch for the spare.

spare tire relocation

Post by bert and hap on 4/19/2009, 1:06 pm

Here is the pics for the spare tire winch we used from a Ford Ranger.

Here is our new cat.

spare tire under cat's belly.

Here is the winch mounted in the forward compartment. I cut a hole large enough to drop the rim holder thru.
I then fabricated a plate large enough to cover the hole. In this plate I cut a 3/16" wide by about 1" long for the cable to run thru. I put sealant between the floor and the plate and screwed the plate to the floor and the winch to the plate.

I welded a nut to the winch shaft which uses a 3/4" wrench. Luckily our tire chocks uses a 3/4" ratchet wrench. !!!I had this planned all along.!!

Since the rim holder was too small, I welded the old spare tire keeper to the bottom of the new rim holder.

Hope this helps. If anyone has any questions I will try to answer. Any comments PRO or CON are appreciated.
Good Luck and Happy Camping.
