Installing an Alarm System in a Ford F350
Anyone ever do this on their own? What unit did you use and how difficult was it. Would you do it again, and would you use the same unit?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Nobody wanted to jump in on that one.
I guess that means leave it to a professional.
Theif,,,,, The guy that knows them in and out.

Yeah, I guess we are torn, do we really need one or not. Do you have one?
Why you got 2 maps in your sig? Is one where you HAVE been, and the other where you WISH you'd been?

Some people mark the states they camped in with or without the cat. I made 2 maps , one on the left with 3 states is with the cat., The other is states I've camped in over the years. Mostly tent camping / truck camping.
I don't have an alarm. I'd say you don't need one. Just don't leave anything on the seat tempting someone to get it. Like your GPS and stuff, Hide it if your gonna be away from the truck for awhile at a Mall or somewhere.
I have to get onto my wife for leaving her Purse in the seat in plain view. She thinks as long as she has her smaller money purse that no one will want just the Bag. If the bags sitting there, They don't know that the money bag's not in there., So BAM, your window gets knocked out. Common sense is a pretty good preventative. But sometimes you just forget, and your in the wrong place at the right time.

Tom:
When faced with same decision, I went with the club for the steering wheel. My assumption waas that it would make stealing the truck more difficult. So far - so good. The cost was A LOT LESS than a "good" alarm system and the install was one of the few things I could not screw up :)

Re: Installing an Alarm System in a Ford F350
Keith,
I forgot about the club, good idea.
I guess I was thinking about an alarm system for 2 purposes,
#1, obviously for the protection of the truck.
#2, If someone was trying to do something stupid, like break into the camper while we are in it, I could hit the alarm panic button and make the truck alarm sound. Hopefully scaring anyone away.
I think this would be better than coming out blasting with both barrels.
But then, that would mean I'd have to have my both barrels with me, which I don't normally do.

Re: Installing an Alarm System in a Ford F350
I installed an alarm on my old '88 Ranger back in high school in the 90's. I know-don't say it.
Last thursday I crossed to double threes.
It's easy if you know what wires to tap. Most alarms give you guidance for the install.
I'd go with Ford's Alarm with remote start if I were interested in one. I don't need one since I don't leave anything out for anyone to take. The best theft deterent is a back seat full of car seats, toys all over the floor, and boogers wiped all over the back of the front seats.
If I have to leave it parked for any length of time, I unplug my DP tuner controller and it acts as a no-start (only cranks, no fire).

Thanks Jetskier,
I called my local Ford dealer, who I bought the truck from, and they pushed me off to Rhino Linings in Newark Delaware. And of course they said, sure we got anything you want.....
Not really sure if I need a remote start, truck sits in the garage unless we are going camping.

Yeah, if I'm at home, the truck is parked in the garage. That's another reason I don't need an alarm. If I'm out, it's during the day with a lot of people around. I think most break-ins occur in the early morning. Most people ignore the alarms nowadays. It would probably still deter a thief though.

Doesn't your key remote for the truck have a little red button with a picture of a horn on it ? , mine does . I seem to accidentally hit the button when I put it in my pocket, theres usually a pile of people standing around. I have to dig them back out and turn it off, and feel like an idiot. But that would work for running someone off in the middle of the night.

Re: Installing an Alarm System in a Ford F350
Go to Best Buy and get a Vipor. Probably the best way of doing it as Best Buy's are everywhere in case there's a problem. And a Vipor with FM tx is probably the best alarm you can buy and the best way to go.
I've installed an alarm on one of the previous trucks and depending on what options, it can be a big job. This one had remote start, Pats bypass, starter disable, FM tx, the works. It took me awhile but it worked good.
The one in the truck now was installed through the dealer. But the alarm in the truck before this was done at Best Buy and I wish I went back to them. However, I was told by the dealer that I'll have no warranty conflicts so that's why I went this way.
There are different things you can do such as the club, a manual starter disable or what I call a passive alarm, ie a 12v blinking led set up with a relay which actives or deactivates with the ignition (check E-bay). Anything to slow them down or make them think that so they'll move on to what looks like to them an easier one.
Problem with the club is that they can have that off in a nano second with bolt cutters or in a second with a hack saw and if their onto the passive alarm...well.
I had a 1987 Buick Grand National stolen 6 mos after I bought it in Niagra Falls, NY Dec 28th. Didn't know what a real bummer was until then! Since, I've had alarms in all my vehicles!
Now I couldn't imagine the hassle if the TV was stolen while on a trip 1000 miles away from home?? With my ins there's a 30 day wait and see if they find it clause. If we were in another country it would be nightmare on camper's street!!!!
