12-volt Wire Guide on Slid-Out

Post by mattebury on 7/28/2008, 2:03 pm

I have the 29BHBP and there is a "plastic spring," for lack of a better term, that guides the 12-volt wires out of the way when the slide retracts. My broke on my Yellowstone trip and I fixed it with good old duct tape. Has this ever happened to anyone and where would I get a replacement when the duct tape patch finally fails?

Here's the broken piece:

Here's my repair:

This is what I did with a 2" hinge and some nuts and bolts.

Now there's a great idea. I'll have to remember that the next time I go the the Despot and look for SS or brass.

Most of them break. Call Rod Batts (574-206-7609), see if he will send you another one. Ask him for the one off the Cardinal line; that's what he sent me, it is about twice as heavy.

Wow, e-mailed Rod over the weekend and he responds first thing this morning saying that he's forwarded my message to the parts department with the directive to get me a new one.

Now that's customer service! Very Happy

Even more wow! The part showed up on my doorstep today. Rod sent it gratis. I was not expecting that since my trailer is out of warranty.

Rod does go the extra mile to keep customers happy and it only cost FR $30 for the part and shipping.

Mine broke on my last outing, and I am having a hard time getting a replacement. I don't want a "freebie" as my unit is three years old. But I like the "hinge" retro, and I think I am going to follow that lead today. Thanks for the info!!!

Update on my broken wire guide. Thanks DXprowler for your info! I took mine off, and found out it was actually broken in two places, one was where it attached to the slide as in your photo, and also about mid way of the contraption it was snapped in to. The reason I think it did this was when I removed the pivot end from under the unit, the aluminum tube that it pivots on was somewhat corroded to the point that the strap pivot was in a "bind" and would not pivot freely. I sanded it down smooth, drilled a small hole thru it, and secured the plastic pivot end with nylon washers and a pin clip. Also lubed it up with silicone, and added this to my maintenance list. I used a 1 1/2" light duty hinge in the middle break, and a 2 1/2" hinge at the attachment to the slide bracket. I really think this is a better fix than replacment with a factory guide. Hats off to DXprowler for the idea!!!

Gee, I noticed that mine is also broken too.

Going to try the hinge idea, thanks DX for the ideal.

Now I just gotta go get a hinge..........

Somebody posted a phone # for FR parts, anyone remember what that # was. I cant find it in any of the searches that I do.

Re: 12-volt Wire Guide on Slid-Out

Mine broke in Yellowstone 2 years ago. I got a new one and installed. They always seem to break on the slide end. If you look at the coach end where the plastic bracket is on a rod, you will notice that nothing holds the bracket up at the top. WHen it slides down the tube and the slide comes in, the slide rail will bind the bracket and it breaks where it is attached to the slide. I placed a 2"inch stainless washer on the rod and shoved the bracket up to level with the attachment on the slide and then put a small hose clamp below the washer to keep the plastic strap level at the top. Now the strap bends when the slide comes but never gets caught by the slide rail. Never broke again in 20K miles of camping. No pictures as I sold the Cat for my new Bristol Bay.
