What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
First topic message reminder :
Here in Florida the sun really beams in thru the skylight in the shower. In the bedroom I use a pillow and in the living room I use an auto screen reflector stuck up with velcro. But it is beginning to get unstuck due to the heat. Any ideals?

My $12 solution
I started with a door cover the same size as my shower skylight, 16" x 24", next i removed all the screws that hold the frame up and replaced them with the male version of a snap, next i removed all the velcro pads from the cover and replaced them with the female version of a snap. 1x1 and always snapping all the snaps back on before marking for the next snap. It does'nt block all of the sun but a good 98% (give or take) so snap on or snap off. Cost twelve bucks and no new holes in the cat. On the 1st snap i used the back piece that supposed to go the the male version on the female part because it has a hole in it so i always know which direction it go's, hope the pictures help.

Nothing,,, the wife likes the light, and it does not bother me. Our usual camping trip is to the coast to escape the heat, so it is around 65-70 degrees on the coast when it is 110 here at home.

Just be warned that you will crack the white plastic housing with the heat retained if you leave the screen in place all the time.

We've been getting by fine without a cover for our shower skylight. A cover would be nice for extreme temperatures, though.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
Jetskier, i never thought about the heat between the shade and the dome, so after reading your comment i went out and stuck my hand between the 2 and yes very , very hot, since we are not currently using the 5er i unsnapped 1/2 of it to let the heat out. This is why this forum works so well so other people can catch the things we don't think about, my only thought was great it blocked the heat so until we are leaving on the next trip 1/2 on 1/2 off then it's on like

I have now made a sliding cover that has reduced the light fantastically but it leaves a nice halo effect when the sun comes up.
All I used is a 4mm vinyl faced ply set into some plastic J section, then used some 16mm electric trunking fixed to the roof light by its fixing screws, this way I have not altered any thing just in case I want to try something different.

Hi I'm new at this .. first post / reply
reading the form is great ! I have a 31ts
Today I installed a shade in my shower . I used mirror clips . (Six in a package) Replaced the screws they are number 8 - 1 1/2"
Used a piece of aluminum sun shade . cut 14.5" wide and 23.5" long . total cost less than 5 bucks .
I installed the clips , then slid the sun screen into place . Later on i could replace the sun screen with a plastic cover or wood .
and slide it in place.

Ole Yella wrote:A very simple fix was to take down the inside part of the sky light put on heavy duty tinfoil, shape it and reinstall it. Really darkens it up. We already have the window factory tinted. I think that will work just fine. I don't think there will be a mold problem. After all, all it does is to block out the sun light and it does not affect the air circulation.
I can always tell old-timers like me who still stay, "tinfoil". We have not had tinfoil in this country for tons of years. All one can find now is aluminum foil :)

Watermamcb welcome to the forum I agree great idea, hope you don't mind if I do the same. I think this is an easy quick fix that even the DW can learn to operate.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
I read an article in ESCAPES Magazine where someone put painters tape across the outside bottom of the skylight, then coated the skylight with liquid rubber roof repair, 2 coats. Then pulled the tape off from the bottom which let some light in, but not the blaring sun.

Skylight Cover
We got a pack of window clips and put them in the existing scews in the skylight (just the 4 corners) and cut the car cover sheild to size and turn the clips over the edge and it stays up with that

We found a real need for shades on the vents and skylights in Alaska. Found it really hard to sleep in bright sunlight at 1:00 am. Haven't had a need to insulate from the heat but think it might work well for cold too.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
I love the dome in the shower for the headroom but do not need it otherwise.
I took the inner cover down and stuffed a couple of towels in there and taped the towels with black duct tape and replaced the cover.
its totally dark and looks factory.
I just remembered where my good towels went. I will replace them with foam one of these days.

The easiest fix is to take velcro strips and place around the lip of the sunlight. Then go to Wal mart and get the black foamboard in the school supplies place. When you apply the velcro, leave both sides affixed and tear the non-stick side off that would be facing down. Then hold the foam board below it and when you have a good cover just push it up to the sticky side of the velcro. It will block all sunlight from the shower. However if it gets wet, just go buy a new piece. I dont trim mine either. Also you can use them for the other skylight vents and the bedroom windows. I made cuts in those to fit and also on the side windows I cut room for the release handles. I also cut a small 3 sided flap that will allow you to lift it and look out the windows. I live in mine and like to sleep in the dark.

Also, the black foam also keeps the Texas heat from entering the unit.

We also used the black foamboard, but I glued some fairly thick foam to it and then applied with velcro. We remove it when my husband uses the shower and then put back up. Did the same thing for the sky light in the livingroom! It helps alot with the heat and sun in the summer. Usually take it off for the fall and cooler temps.

I really think FR could save money by not installing the sky light in the livingroom. In FL so much heat comes in and it is hard to cool the camper in the summer. This is the only camper that had the sky light.
