What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
Here in Florida the sun really beams in thru the skylight in the shower. In the bedroom I use a pillow and in the living room I use an auto screen reflector stuck up with velcro. But it is beginning to get unstuck due to the heat. Any ideals?

I'm interested in this also. I had thought about the same idea you used in the living room, auto screen w/ velcro, but that doesn't seem to be working for you. Are you using the adhesive backed velcro on the skylight frame, and the other side of the velcro on the screen? If so, which side is coming loose? I was wondering if you could possibly staple the velcro to the skylight frame w/o doing much damage?
Just a thought. Anyway, I will be eagerly watch to see other's response.

As a temporary fix, I took off the interior cover, put a piece of black construction paper over it, and re-installed. I too would like some other ideas.

Ok, this is the third time entering my reply. Love computers.
I took down the inside piece of the skylight and put a piece of foam up there but the foam was pink so it gave the whole room a pink contrast and Jeff hated it and it was not dark enough for us. So, I took it down again placed a thick/dark towel over the dome and cut to fit then placed the dome back up in place. I left the foam in to insulate and to hold the towel in place. We also tinted the bedroom windows with limo black so now we have to turn a light on to do anyting in the bathroom/bedroom area. We love it and we can sleep past 6am.
I am interested in what others have done.

We're working on an idea now.
Try this - (if it doesn't work, let me know. You'll save us the time of trying it ourselves :) )
For the skylight above the shower:
1. Prepare 4 pieces of velcro (the scratchy side) by putting a small hole in the center. Place a washer on the scratchy side of the velcro. This is the "Velcro assembly." Note: the Velcro should be larger than the washer, the washer should be large enough that it won't work itself through the hole in the Velcro.
2. Locate the screws nearest the 4 corners of the vent frame. Remove one.
3. Put the screw you just removed (or a slightly longer one if necessary) into the Velcro assembly.
4. Replace the screw/Velcro assembly into the screw hole. - Repeat with the other corners.
5. Measure the distance between each of the pieces of Velcro that you just attached to the skylight frame. Sew a piece of Velcro (the soft side) to match up with the Velcro on the skylight frame on to a sun shield.
6. Attach sun shield to skylight.
Or, you could use Reflectix (that shiny stuff that some of the people here use to insulate their basement doors). That might require reinforcing with thin strips of wood to keep it from sagging.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
A very simple fix was to take down the inside part of the sky light put on heavy duty tinfoil, shape it and reinstall it. Really darkens it up. We already have the window factory tinted. I think that will work just fine. I don't think there will be a mold problem. After all, all it does is to block out the sun light and it does not affect the air circulation.

Anything installed between the skylite and the shower would end up creating a mold concern, wouldn't it?

When my skylight got busted in the hail storm in March, I replaced it with a smoked one. This really helps block the sun from coming in. Buts its a $115.00 fix.
here is a picture of it.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
We're not worried about mildew. Scruffy couldn't stand up straight in the shower if it weren't for the skylight. So, the sunshield would have to come down with every shower. The last one in the shower sprays it top to bottom with a shower cleaner - it dries quickly. The sun shield wouldn't have to be replaced until morning. We don't mind the light coming in through the skylights and vents.

Some where on another site I saw a fix someone made. He took the skylight frame down and installed some kind of aluminum u channel along the edges of the skylight frame. He then slid a small cut to fit piece of plywood into the channel. If I remember right he painted it white to match. He just put it up when he wanted to darken the room. I will try to find a link.

Sounds good. Is there enough room to get the plywood off to the side so it will slip into the groove? I hope you can find the link.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
JUst bought a small roll of the aluminum sun screen today. Planned to cut to the full size of the skylight and use velcro to hold it in place. I didn'y yhink the heat was as bad on the edges of the skylight as it wa in the vent areas. Scruffy's idea wouuld probably work, and I would try it if the velcro doesns't stick. In the vents I cut the sunscree over size by about 2 inches so that I can wedge it in. Really haven't had any trouble with it staying put. We did something similar with our old rv while in Alaska to get rid of the midnight sun. We velcroed the sun screen to the door windo and it held ok.
I don't think these techniques will hold forever, but some new velcro on occassion and they should be good to go. My biggest concern for shading is to keep the New Mexico sun from fading every thing inside. There are a few nights where lights are a little bright and I as sure I would put up the sun screens in the skylight and bedroom. Our windows came tinted and aren't too bad, but could be a little darker if going to Alaska.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
That looks like a good idea for the skylight - to keep the light out. We would want something to keep the heat out, and that cover would let heat into the room on the side where the light is showing through. Maybe reflectix would hold in the channels, and a strip or dot of Velcro on the ceiling might keep it tighter.
Now I have a question. If the skylight cover is very tight against the frame of the skylight, keeping the hot air trapped inside, would there be a danger of the skylight popping out on top? I know that here in hot Texas people like to keep their car or truck windows open just a tiny bit to let the heat out, so the windows don't pop out. Is that even necessary?

Don't know. I don't see how it could. All the tinfoil does is to block out the sun light. It don't block any air circulation.TC wrote:Anything installed between the skylite and the shower would end up creating a mold concern, wouldn't it?

Thanks Carpe Diem. Gonna have the hubby look into the mod for the skylights from the link you put from my other fav forum, the rv.net! Never would have thought of this mod myself but with teens sleeping on the pullout it would be great to block the a.m. light. Thanks

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
I use the Reflectix bubble style aluminum insulation for all of the windows in the summer. I use velcro to attach it to the Skylight in the bathroom but it does melt off with the heat. I like Scruffy's idea of using the screws with washers and will try it next summer. I cut the Reflectix for the windows so it just fits inside the frame behind the shades. Only a couple of windows, without frames by the dinette and sofa, are a problem but velcro can be used there. We frequently camp in Redding, Ca where it reached 112 degrees during our last vacation (needless to say, we left two days early because the A/C just couldn't keep up even with Reflectix!). I also use it to block out bright night lights at some campgrounds.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
It won't block heat from the sun, but how about a day/night shade? The new wildcats have this in some of the skylights on certain floor plans. I didn't look close at them, but they had the day/night shade with only night shade and it was inside the skylight frame and seemed to look and work very well.

We have skylights in the Front Room slide. They put a shade in them to help keep the sun and heat out. Works pretty good.

I was thinking of pulling the trim ring down and gluing in some strong magnets. Then sew in or glue on some magnets on to a reflective insulating shade cut to shape. That way it is easy to pull on and off when ever you do or don't want the light

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
I used a skylight shade. I have them for all 4 of my big skylights (not the 14x14s). One in the bunkhouse, two in the slideout and one over the shower.
Just google "25-8949 shade". I got mine for around $45 each about 4 years ago.
http://www.rvupgradestore.com/detail_25-8949__14.html
Here's a photo of the one in my bunkhouse. It's about 30" long. Look to the left of the skylight. On the right you can see the little catch it grabs onto. It's room darkening. The skylight in the bunkhouse was the same as the one in the shower until I installed this handy vented escape hatch.

I use the Reflectix bubble aluminum insulation but the velcro still comes loose in the heat. I think the j channel or pull shade is the ticket.

Re: What do you use to keep the sun light from coming in thru the skylight in the shower?
A couple of weeks my wife bought a cover she thought would work on covering the sky light above the shower, it lasted about 2 hrs before the velcro let go,. so after starring at it during last weeks trip, i came up with the idea to use snaps, the cover she bought is 16" x 24" witch is accually for the door but is the same size of the sky light. So i'm going to use the same holes and screws to hold the male version of the snap in place and then put the female version on the shade cover, in theory i don't forsee any problems, just snap on and snap off. we will see
