Anyone own a Camp Chef 2 or 3 burner?

Post by TC on 3/28/2012, 7:31 am

I'm eyeballing a Camp Chef 3 burner cooker with the matching griddle. But, before I lay down that kind'a cash, I'd sure like to hear pros and cons from those who already own one.

Hi TC,
I have the two burner model CampChef I also have the griddle for it. I just got it last season so I am still learning on the griddle. You will get all the heat you need with the burners. I really don't have anything bad to say about it.

Jim,

With the griddle on, did it heat evenly, or did you find yourself moving things around?

In your opinion, are they worth the money?

TC,
That's where I am still learning. It definitely heats more in the middle (over the burner), and yes I do have to move things around. No question the stove is worth the money. As far as the griddle, yes I think once I use it more I will feel more comfortable with it.
I was thinking about the BBQ box that they sell with it until I saw it at Cabelas. It had an open bottom which would allow all the juices from whatever you are cooking to fall into the stove. This would create a huge cleanup. I think I will pass on that.

Our Boy Scout troop just bought 4 of these: http://www.campchef.com/yukon-2-burner-stove.html
The work GREAT. The price at our local Costco was $119.99 + tax.

Now I just have to make up my mind whether to get a 2 or 3 burner. scratch

I was looking at them in Cabela's, but I know I can find a better price someplace else.

If you have the room to store it I would go with the 3-burner. That's what I have with the 2-burner griddle and the 2-burner grillbox. That way I still have room to cook a pot of something over the extra burner. With the griddle, get it up to temp before you start cooking. This will minimize the hot spotting. Camp chef also makes a heat diffuser to put over the burner which I have been meaning to try. The grill box could stand to be a little better design. It does drip down through the bottom. The mess isn't all that bad and flare ups are minimal. I've had the entire setup for at least 6 or 7 seasons now and it is still in good shape. I ran black pipe back to our cook location with a quick disconnect a couple of years ago which makes it really nice. Camp Chef sells the hose to do this and eliminate the regulator.
The worst thing about Cabela's on something like this is shipping could kill you. But since your in NE it's a good excuse to visit the mother ship and pick one up.

Good things to know. We actually have a Cabela's about 10 minutes from our house over in LaVista, NE; which is a suburb of Omaha for all practical purposes.

It takes discipline to stay out of there, cuz whenever I'm there, my wallet grabs me by the throat and threatens me with terrible things if I don't buy something. clown

Wanted to add, I don't need their gril set-up since I already have a grill.

This will be more for the griddle and for cast iron cookware. I LOVE to make big breakfasts outside when ever I can. It enhances the weekend experience. I can already smell the coffee perking, the bacon sizzling , the hashbrowns crisping, and the eggs...man I gotta stop, I'm hungry all the sudden!! Laughing

Did I see where a wind deflector is also an added expense, or does one actually come with it from the get-go?

I'm not sure if the wind deflector comes standard or not. I would recommend it. They don't work well with the grill box. When you open the box it hits the deflector. I should have added that I have the Pro 90. Other 3-burner units don't have the folding legs.
One thing I wish is that the legs had some sort of leveling adjustemnt on them. We seldom camp where there is a pad.

I think what I'm looking at is also the Pro 90.

What I do with our folding tables, and would also work for this app, is to take wood shims, and tape them up well. That way I can adjust each leg higher or lower, within reason of course, by placing a shim under each leg until the top is level. Can't think of the name of the tape I used, but its black and has a rough texture to the outside of it, almost like fine grit sandpaper.

Yeah, the leveling is a pain, but necessary if you want your grease to run away from the food. We always find what we need to level it out right at the sight. I like the idea of shims though.

They do work well...another one of those inexpensive mods that has a positive impact on your weekend.

Not yet. Too many things going on right now.

But, I'm figuring on getting something before summer gets in full stride.
