hard cover on truck

Post by spock on Thu Jan 12, 2012 9:35 am

Now that I am going to get a fifth wheel I have to take my hard cover off my truck, I sure hate that. It keeps my Honda!s dry and my extra fuel tank from the weather also my batteries dry and my charger and inverter dry. I will have to get my extra fuel tank cut on some and rewelded. Is there anyway to keep a hard cover on?

Get a folding hard cover. I just happen to have one for sale for an 8' bed F-250. That particular one folds over twice, and doesn't give you full access to the bed (the front panel will not fold up), but you don't have to remove it to pull the 5th wheel. The one I have on my new truck folds over 4 times, then folds up against the rear windshield to give you full access to the bed.

The only thing you need to be careful of is the type of hitch you get. It needs to have a low profile (below the bed rails) for the cover to work.

Best thing I know is get a tri-fold cover. You can get either a hard or soft cover, I have a soft tri-fold and it works good, just fold it up to the front when you are hooked up and it still keeps stuff in the front dry.

I wanted to go with a tri-fold hard cover, but after measuring the height when folded I would only have about 2 inches of clearance between the cover and cat on level ground. We have a short bed. I went with vinyl cover that I can roll up, have had it for two years and so far no problems.

A buddy of mine has the roll-up kind. When rolled up, it sets right up against the back window out of the way; just about the same height as the back seat. When rolled out, its held down by velcro strips running the length of the side rails. Not sure how it compares cost-wise to hard covers.

There used to be a vinyl snap on cover that had a hole in it where the 5th wheel hitch is located. You can hitch up and then put the cover back on. Don't know whether it's still sold or not. Snap on covers have become unpopular lately.

These covers are not cheap, I may have the welding shop build me some small aluminum boxes to put my batteries in and stuff, I only need one Honda 2000 to run my a/c, I can put the other one in the basement, maybe. I can put a lock on my fuel tank. Some things I have to keep dry

What kind of truck do you have, bed size? I paid about $650 for my current BakFlip...brand new. I'm selling my old Extang cheaper than that, but like I said, it's for an 8' bed. There are ads for the Peragon cover all over these web sites that has it for $599. So yeah, not cheap, but they can get expensive for sure.

Last year I went with the Extang Solid Fold. It's a tri-fold. Very well constructed. So far I have had plenty of room between the nose and cover when folded up. The thing I liked about this cover is how quick it comes off and on. If I ever got into a bad angle situation I can have it off in less than 2 minutes. You open this cover from the inside so you need a locking tailgate handle if your worried about security. Plenty of options to take care of that issue.

Exactly Treekiller. This is the one I have for sale. I towed with it on for over a year (until I got my new truck) and never had to take it off...for towing. I did have to remove it to transport a scooter.

I have saw some great covers on here but I have to keep stuff dry when going down the road with the fifth wheel hooked up. My fuel tank sits 2in from the rail up front, I may have to get a slider hitch to keep tank from trailer, fuel tank helps me out a lot but I may still get another cover to use when I am not pulling trailer. I have a 08 silverado 6ft5in bed

Re: hard cover on truck

Post by Cardinal_Bill on Sat Jan 14, 2012 8:45 am

Long ago I saw a truck, possibly Canadian, with a hard cover that had a notch in it so the truck could be backed up and hitched on. Looked like there was a separate chunk to cover that hole when not hooked up. If I did see a brand/name on it I don't remember it. It was an interesting idea. I have a rollup soft cover, with metal poles providing support across the bed, that straps into place just behind the cab of the truck. Held along the edge by velcro, etc. It was bought in December of 05 and still works well, some cracks at the end where it snaps down by the tailgate, and minimal wear elsewhere. It's on the truck and the truck is in Anchorage, I'm not, so I don't know it's brand either. Big help I am. Laughing

I have a soft cover that is hinged at the front and framed with aluminum frame and ribs. To remove it you unhook the two cylinders on the side and snap them back to the frame. You then remove it by lifting it up past a 45 degree angle and if comes out of the trough across the front of the bed. This is very easy and one man can do it but the DW and i usually do it together because of size and to assure we don't nick anything. we then put it inside the fifth wheeler and when we arrive at out destination we simply re-install on the truck. On, or off, is about a 30 second operation.

We had the Pace Edwards rolltop for 13 years and just plane wore it out. We've had the Retrax for over a year and it works really well and looks good too. Diana

Wife loves the Retrax. Had another brand but she could not operate it. Retrax is one hand operation.
