muffler types

Post by GustheUsher on 11/9/2011, 12:56 pm

I have recently installed a banks cold air intake on my Dodge, it has made a difference with "pep" and full milage, now I have to complete the process. All diesel people say "air in...air out" I want a straight through flow type muffler but I don't want something that will be loud when towing, I don't want the fatigue that comes from listening to a loud drone noise over long trips. I have read some mufflers made the truck sound "mean" I don't need that either, I just want a muffler that reduces back pressure to zero but without the drone noise on the highway......any thoughts?

I don't think a drone free performance muffler exists. I looked before and had no luck. My oem muffler rotted out the bottom and dealer said 660 bucks to replace muffler, two clamps, tailpipe and labor. I figured id just buy a performance exhaust kit cheaper. But I couldn't find anything that was drone free. So I'll be getting the oem muffler replaced with another oem muffler.

I can't stand exhaust drone at all. Not even a little.

That aftermarket muffler was one of the ones that I have heard that is best for cabin comfort. I think my OE is louder than that now? Thanks for posting that.

Sounds good, I believe that will be what I go with when it's time. Let us know if you get one and how it turns out. What kind of improvement did you see with the cold air intake?

I have a 4" Magnaflow Stainless system I put on in 2001. It has a resonator to help with excessive exhaust noise. I don't have a drone nor is it loud over stock at cruising speeds. If you get on it, it's a throaty sound to observers on the passenger side.

I don't have a Cummins either, but I know they seem to have more drone.

Sorry, I forgot to update everyone. I did alot of research and talked with alot of people with aftermarket exhaust, I went with the Magnaflow muffler, sounds great when you stand on it, but absolutely no drone on the highway...which is what I was worried about. I have had it on for about 2 months and have noticed my intown mpg have increased. I have not had a chance to take it on a long drive to see what the highway mpg will be, but with the cold morning warm ups and just back and forth to work I am steady at 17-18 mpg, I am very happy with that. By the time towing season starts the upgrades will have paid for themselves.

Did you do the Super Scoop with the Ram-Air Intake System? What was the part number you bought (42145)? I think mine is the same even though it's an '06

I don't have the super scoop yet, I am pretty happy with this set up, 42145 was the part number.
