Re: Weather conditions in the Northeast
We just got power back last night around 6:00. We were ok because I bought a generator after being without power for 10 days in 2008. I had a tree snap in my yard and come down in the driveway just missing my truck and my wife's Jeep. I was worried for a while about the 'Cat because some of the trees were bent WAY over. Luckily they didn't break. My yard is a mess with broken branches, but I will let the snow melt before cleaning up. All in all we came thru ok though. thanks for asking

Re: Weather conditions in the Northeast
We lost our power, telephone and internet at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, 10/31. Didn't get it back until yesterday at 6:00 p.m. This has become a regular occurance for us here in NH. It seems that no matter how much limbing the power companies do, the storms outwit them.
This one was comprised of very, very heavy wet snow. It actually looked like sausage coming out of the shute on my snow blower. On one of our main roads, whole trees had snapped off a good distance back from the wires and fell across them, driving the primary 4,000V line into the the secondary lines. This happened in six places on this one road. There were whole sections of wire down between two and three poles. Unbelievable damage to the electrical grid in our town. I think that we are 100% back here in WIndham.
We are well prepared for this kind of foolishness. We have two Kerosun space heaters, a gas fireplace and a 10,000W generator (2 cylinder, 16HP, B&S V-twin). Our preparations have gotten us through many storms since we set this all up 10 years ago.
We used our cell phone to stay in touch with our friends and fellow church members to make sure that all was well with them too. We have a number of seniors in our congregaton who sometimes need help and a place to stay warm.
Thanks for the shout out Frank. I understand that parts of NJ and NY actually got hit worse than we did.

Mike: Glad you got your services back. Since you had cell phone service you might want to check into the Hot Spot for wireless internet during the bad weather. With Verizon you can stop and start the service as needed. Jim

Glad my NH neighbors got your power back...I have a friend in londonderry that was without as of friday...they were telling him saturday so I assume he's all set now...
We were out four days this time and four days during the tropical storm...the worst for us was the Ice storm of a few years ago...that was 9 days I think...
My Honda has been some of the best money I have EVER spent...I would be lost without it...
What do you guys have for powering up set ups?
I have an 8 circuit gentran, but as of this last storm I am removing it and puting in a whole panel transfer switch...its kind of a neat set up it goes inbetween the 200 amp main breaker and the breaker buss bars so it will power the entire house...not much money for these either...they were not available a few years back or I would have put one in then...you do have to be careful of not pulling to much wattage but you can just shut off non essential breakers rather than going without circuits you wish you had.
I actually went for a snowmobile ride on that sunday! can you believe it, in October....crazy

I have the setup that you are talking about. Very nice having the whole panel available. We just know that we can't use things like washer dryer and oven. We run it with an 8000 watt Briggs and Stratton generator.
