Bike Rack

Post by abryant on 10/28/2011, 1:31 am

I am currently looking for a way to secure 4 bicycles to the camper for transport. We currently have one that slides into a 2 inch receiver on the back of my wife's Acadia, but would like to find a way to put one on the camper. When I took the cat in for it's yearly checkup I talked with the dealer about putting a 2 inch receiver on the back bumper. He recommended against it, stating that the back bumper on my model was not setup strong enough to handle the weight of the spare tire and a bike rack with 4 bicycles on it. While we were in myrtle beach I snapped a quick picture of a rack that mounted on the tongue of the trailer. I'm beginning to believe that this was a home or custom made setup as I can't find it anywhere for sale. Has anybody seen it or have any suggestions?

Go to a reliable hitch shop and have them install a 2" receiver attached to the trailer frame. Your dealer may have a point if he's talking about a bumper only attachment, that's why you want to go to the frame.

My WC came with a frame-attached receiver from the factory which was rated for 300# (plenty for 4 bikes). Since then I've had it reinforced and it's now rated for 500# from which I suspend 400# of Honda scooter and motorcycle rack...no problems.

Ive read on this site about others who have lost the bikes and bumper, due to having the receiver attached to the bumper.
I installed a 2 inch receiver on our 32 qbbs with very little effort.
It did need some welding so you may want a shop to do it. i`ve never had a problem with it since the install.
I have a Hitch Haul rack installed in it with a metal footlocker bolted to the hitch haul that i carry all my citronella and extra septic connectors and hoses in.
Im guessing the weight loaded at 120lbs.
Hope this helps.
