Flag Ceremony

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 10/26/2011, 9:43 am

Saturday night we went to the first 2011 World Series game at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, TX. Even though it was a very lopsided loss for the Rangers (Cardinals scored a whole lot better), can't remember or don't want to remember the lousy score.

Anyway, all that aside, the Flag Ceremony was beautiful, and in our opinion far surpassed whatever the game could have been.

The flags are being held by military personnel. At the end of the singing of the National Anthem, they made the flag wave. During the ceremony, there was a fly-by of jets from the Naval Air Station in Grand Prairie. The ceremony brought me to tears.

Ya gotta love Texas and Texans. They know how to show their patriotism. Not like some of the dregs of society that are "occupying" half of our cities.

Not celebrating yet. Hopefully, tonight. We watched the game until 10pm, ET. Then it was like our TV turned into a pumpkin. We lost our connection. It seemed like all TV turned off at 10pm - we couldn't get anything with the antenna, and our direct TV is set up to receive Dallas/Fort Worth local channels, not anything out of town. So - we found it on the radio and listened. It's funny, we stared at the radio, or looked at it if something interesting happened. Laughing

I'm hoping we will be able to watch tonight.

These are really good seats. Our daughter and her DH have 4 full-season seats in the front row of club level. Not directly behind home plate, but a little to the right. Kind of between home plate and the Rangers dugout. They have 4 seats because they like to have an empty seat on each end. Sometimes they invite friends - anytime we want to go, all we have to do is say so, but we'd rather watch it on TV.

DH and I were at Game 1 of the Series in St. Louis. They unfurled a similar, if not the same, flag here. It is so impressive.

Last night's game had me on pins and needles. Great finish though.

I think the teams that display the big flags own them.

The Rangers actually do this flag ceremony a few times a season, and maybe St. Louis does too. Our daughter and her hubby were invited to be flag holders this summer, but because of the extreme heat, they declined.... even though they felt it would be a great honor and experience.

I didn’t want to write anything about the playoffs or the World Series because I didn’t want to jinx the Cardinals. Now that they are the champs I can breathe easy and respond to this post.

Yes, Jebby and I were at game one of the World Series. BTW, did I mention that the St. Louis Cardinals are the World Series Champions. What is really cool is that the series MVP is a hometown boy. Freese went to school right here in St. Louis County. How cool is that?

Attending game one required a lot of patience on the part of baseball fans because of the incredibly tight security. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden were attending the game. The lines to get into the ballpark were slow moving and very, very long.

Everyone in the photo was in a line to get into the park.

Once we entered the stadium we headed right for our seats. Before we could enter our section of the ballpark we had get into another security line and pass through metal detectors. Are you kidding me? As it turns out, Obama and Biden were sitting very close to our section of the park.

Jeez, empty your pockets and pass through the metal detector like the other sheep please.

Obama and Biden escorted a wounded war hero to the pitchers mound to throw out the first pitch. Notice the flag being unfurled in the background.

Game one was a 3-2 Cardinal victory. Driving back home is always more fun when the Cardinals win. Did I mention that the Cardinals are the World Series Champions? I almost feel sorry for the Texas Rangers fans who have had to suffer through the series loss last year, and then the series loss this year…almost. Did I mention that the St. Louis Cardinals are the World Series Champions for the 11th time? 11 in '11 has been the motto throughout the playoffs.

The real question for Cardinal's fans is whether Pujols, who is now a free agent, will be a Cardinal next year. Although Albert didn't have a great World Series, this future Hall of Famer could go down in baseball history as the greatest player of all time. It would be a shame to see him leave St. Louis.

Although I have lived in Texas for 22 years, I've been a Cardinals fan since 1958. I root for the Rangers during their regular season, but when playing the Cardinals, I must go with my long time favorites. It was a GREAT series. The Rangers were a formidable opponent.
