Post by mattebury on 10/11/2011, 4:18 pm

My brother and I are headed for the California RV show here soon. Probably good thing the DWs are not coming, I know we'd be Jonsing for a new trailer.

Mark,
Have fun! And bring back a report on the new Wildcats that you see.

Re: CA RV Show

Post by mattebury on 10/24/2011, 4:24 pm

Well, my brother and I went to the California RV show yesterday, and no Wildcats. I was really hoping to see a Sterling.

Anyway, the wife and I have been thinking about getting a garage model toy hauler and getting a Fiat 500 to bring along with us on our trips. It's an idea that's a few years down the road, gotta get the kid out of the house first, so that was the main thrust of the trip, but we did manage to look at a few other units. What's hard to believe is that even a cheapie unit's gonna run in the mid 60's (all prices are sticker) and to get a true 4-season unit with halfway decent quality is gonna run around $100k. Dutchman seems to have the best quality of the bunch with Keystone not too far behind them. Forest River was OK in the middle of the pack.

What got me was that even though the main area was sealed off from the garage, the designers still had the toy hauler mentality for floor plans. What I mean by that is that they still had strip couches along the wall with movable long and narrow tables and a lot of wasted space. Very few had a dinette or free standing dining table and chairs, even though they did have the space for it. The example that I have is a double living room slide with enough floor space in the middle for a dance floor. The other crazy thing was that, in my humble opinion, all the seating areas were reversed (by that I mean the couch was where the dining area should be and vice versa) so that there was not a comfortable viewing position for the TV from the couch, even with the TV rotated out. Since there were a lot of manufacturer reps, they got an earful from my brother and me about design. Some took it as the constructive criticism that we meant it to be and others tried to tell us why we were wrong.

Since garage model toy haulers are relatively new, I'm hoping that they evolve over the next few years when it's time for me and the Mrs. to get a new unit.

Sorry you didn't see any Wildcats. I was hoping for your viewpoint on how they looked.
