Good Year Marathon

Post by Eric on 10/5/2011, 3:02 am

Has anyone heard of or had any experience with Goodyear Marathon Tire? Where I live, I can't get the maxxis that is recommended by many.

Eric,

Goodyear Marathons, AKA Chinese bombs, are NO GOOD!!! If you read in www.rv.net there have been so many posts about these junk tires. I belong to the Montana forum, and these tires are standard on the Montana, lots of folks change the tires before they get the camper home. There are so many posts about the tires blowing and ripping the side of the camper up.

I still have them on our Montana, and so far, no problems. But when its time to buy new, they will NOT be Marathons.

Of course, our Montana's are a lot heavier than a Wildcat, but still, but something NOT made in China.

Did you ask any of your local tire stores if they can order Maxxis? There are other brands that people have been using, with no problems that I'm aware of. I hope they will speak up.

Most tires are china bombs these days unfortunately. I have the marathons on mine. 2nd season on them without problems. Had the towmasters as the OEM. They lasted until mid summer last year, then the belts all let loose. I think it is a flip of the coin when it comes to these china tires. Biggest thing is watch your loads, monitors the pressures and wear pattern. Lastly have your frame aligned at the first sign of irregular wear on the tires.

Everyone talks about having their axles or frame aligned but I have yet found a place that can do it nearby. Even my RV repair place has no clue... whom do you send them too?? My right sides wear alot faster than the left sides; not only this 313RE but the 27F I had before did the same. Course way things are going, it might never leave the storage lot.

Most heavy truck shops offer alignments. The local diesel alignment shop does frame alignments for my dealer. Check around with some of the big rig shops....they should be able ot steer you in the right direction.

Search for "Frame & Alignment" or "suspension" or "springs". You want someone that specializes in this area, not RV's. You'll find them working on industrial trucks & trailers. Certainly not your standard tire shop that does alignments. They have to bend the axles to align them.

Call these guys. Maybe they can help or steer you in the right direction.

Another thing that could be causing the uneven wear is more weight on one side of the trailer. To figure this out, you'll have to find a place that can scale each tire. Most of the places like CAT can only weigh the axles.

Thanks Scott for the lookup...........well, actually, since this WC is only 8 months old, (I've gone through 2 right sides sofar @ 10,000 miles) I think FR should foot the bill, but know darn well they wont. Dont think it is a weight issue on one side or the other myself, but would have to find one of my old race car buddies that weigh each tire on their scales...dont think they would handle the weight though..

They might. Call Rod Batts and talk to him. They paid for my alignment when it was new three years ago. However, it had more problems and they also had to replace an entire axle.

A couple of years ago we had 3 out of the 4 oem Good Year Marathons with belt separations coming home from one trip. Got lucky they didn't blow.
