Underbelly Adhesive Tape

Post by bradybr on 9/29/2011, 8:02 am

First topic message reminder :

Hi folks, I rarely start a post, but mostly hang out in the background reading your comments. Can I just say that I am really impressed with the knowledge of the members on the forum! I always know exactly where I can go to find information I need especially with my little bit of experience of owning a travel trailer.

The question I have is about the tape FR has used to "seal" the seams of the underbelly on my 28 footer. I just got back from Goblin Valley State Park in Utah and noticed that even more of the tape has pulled away from the underbelly material. (BTW, sorry if I am using incorrect terms for this stuff. I hope you can follow my questioning.) At any rate, I went to a well established and "favorite" dealership near my home and asked if they had that type of tape for the underbelly. They did, but a roll of, I believe it was 50 feet, would have cost me $85. Ouch! I had previously tried duct tape on some areas, but it comes off almost immediately when travelling.

Okay, get to the question, Bob! Do any of you folks know what I can use in place of that expensive tape that will adhere to the underbelly? Thank you, in advance, for all of your great advice!! What a GREAT forum for gaining knowledge. Bob

Thanks Dan. Evidently the dealerships I go to are not hip to this scrim tape. We had a electrical outage yesterday so I couldn't work on the computer, therefore the company sent me home. I decided with the time I had I'd go to these dealerships to ask for the tape. They had underbelly tape ($80 a roll), but said it wasn't Scrim Shield Waterproof Mending Tape, and they wouldn't sell what they had by the foot. I have two other dealerships on the other side of town I'll attempt to contact.

When you only need 3 feet and you need to buy a roll for 80. Ouch.

Found this stuff called Hurricane tape at my local lumber yard. It looks just like the tape from the factory, except it is white. Nothing a little spray paint won't fix once it is in place. It is REALLY sticky. I think it is going to be better than the gorilla tape fix that I have to do every other year. I paid $11 for a 60 yard roll of the two inch stuff. They had some 3 inch rolls, but wanted $20 a roll for them. I opted for the cheaper roll until the verdict is out......will keep you posted.

Put some on tonight before I put the kitty to sleep for the winter. Attemping to seal up all the hole to keep the mice at bay....don't know if it will help, but makes me feel better....at least until spring when I see the remnants of one of those little suckers somewhere. The hurricane tape seemed just like the OEM tape that FR used. I reinforced existing and went over areas that I had used gorilla tape. Won't know how it holds up to travel until next year, but it seems pretty solid. I was going to paint it black, but thought what the heck, nobody seems the underbelly except me, so I said screw it and left it. Will update again if I see any different, but it seems as good as gorilla and probably the same as the OEM.

Maybe not painting it will turn out to be a good idea. When you look under the trailer to check, it will be easy to spot the white tape. Black on black or on a dark surface wouldn't show up well.
