Sta-Bil Diesel Additive

Post by RonK on 9/25/2011, 7:35 am

Anybody got a strong opinion on using Sta-Bil Diesel additive? I'm in colorado so it will get cold and I have an aux tank that holds 30 gallons that probably should be treated so it wont go bad or gell if I'm not driving long drives..

I've never used Sta-Bil, but always use Diesel Kleen in the winter time.

I would think it would work just fine.

I've been running all over Colorado, Wyoming, Utah for many years and have never used a fuel additive. I've never had a problem with my truck or snocat (both diesel).

I probably just jinxed myself.

LOL, my truck sits for months at a time with full tanks, 85 gallons in all. So I guess putting the Diesel Kleen in is more piece of mind than anything else.

I only use one of two, either Howes fuel additive or Diesel Kleen in the silver container. Both yield real world results and just plain work. And with the Ultra Low Sulfur mandated requirements we need all the added fuel lubricity we can get.

Use it the 6.? needs help with it. Almost every time I pull the WC I use STP fuel injector cleaner in one tank to cut as much carbon as I can and send it out the tail pipe. Yellow bottle and treats 35 gallons. After that one tank and in between pulls I add the additive from Ford. Mine sits a lot also. Bought to pull or carry loads. IF I need a run around I use my new pickup which is a 1994 Ford Taurus with 145,000 on it.

Anyone had a problem with excessive turbo pressure indications when using diesel clean? I have used it in the past and it did run better, smoother and quieter. However, after a tank or two, I get a turbo pressure indication of 2 to 4 pounds at idle. I can not tell any detrimental effects other than that. After using the additive, it may take 5000 miles for the indication to go back to "0" at idle. Would appreciate any ideas on this.

If you have 5% bio-diesel, would you still need the added lubricity? I read somewhere that biodiesel does the same. ?

To process bio-fuel you use methanol and lye. Though the bio may have better lubricity properties compared to our ultra low sulfar fuels, I don't believe it's enough. Now look at what my tv is. A few hundred bucks for an injection pump and 20 bucks for an injector, I still use an additive. If I was running a Dura- or a stroke, a $20 bottle of additive is cheap insurance.
(note: stroke injector: $140-$200ea. duramax injector: $260-$380ea.)

Is running the silver Diesel Kleen all year long better than using the white bottle in winter as an "all around additive"?

I think the only difference between the white bottle and the silver bottle is that one has anti gel in it for the winter time. Although I would think up in Canada, your fuel should have LOTS of anti gel in it Laughing

I don't remember is there is a price difference, but if the anti gel is more expensive, I'd just use it in the winter time.

But to answer your question, I guess you can, but it probably doesn't help through the warm weather.

There seems to be mixed opinions on this subject. However, if I'm going to err, I'm going to do it on the more cautious side. I'll probably be getting some Diesel Kleen very soon.

Re: Sta-Bil Diesel Additive

I use additive in my truck on a regular basis. My owners manual stated to check with dealer for approved fuel treatment. My dealer told me via e mail that the only approved treatment for my thruck is produced by Stanadyne. Dealer sells a bottle that treats 30 gallon of fuel for $ 12.25 per bottle. Not wanting have any warranty issues I checked with Stanadyne. You can purchase the same product that they produce for GM. I purchase on line and pay less than $ 3.00 to treat 30 gallons. I use their standard performance formula on a reqular basis and frequently use their lubricity formula. They are Ford and GM oem approved. I figure the cost of the treatment is minimal compared to the cost of a new truck. I ran across a diesel fuel lubricity study for ULSD a while back. It indicated that 2% bio diesel had more lubricity than any of the aftermarket lubricants. It showed that some of the additives even degraded the lubricity. Here is a link to the study. There was also a nice comparison chart for this study but I am having trouble locating it.
