Wildcat shopping - best west coast discounts found?

Post by Thefamilyman on 9/23/2011, 5:56 am

Sorry if this is in the wrong section - nothing else seemed any better when trying to decide where to post.

So no, not currently a Wildcat owner. We're looking to move up from our Hybrid of 8 years into a fifth wheel in the next few months. We want a bunkhouse with a separate room for our two young boys with extra bunks for their occasional friends. The 312BHX is tops on our list right now so I have been scouring the internet looking for the best deals - would like to start talking to the right dealer now in preparation for when we are ready to pull the trigger. Anyway, the best I've come across is Couch's RV Nation - sent me an email quote 30% below MSRP (not sure how accurate the MSRPs actually are - but that is my only means of comparing right now). That would bring the unit into the $26K range which will certainly fit our budget. But we live in Northern CA and getting the trailer here would add $2500-$3000 to the whole thing.

So... Has anyone come across a west coast dealer that sells in the 30-35% off MSRP range?

Thanks

Hello Thefamilyman and welcome to the forum.

I did move your post to the GENERAL CAMPER TOPIC's category.

Cant really suggest anyone for you since I live on the right side, but, you will hear different experiences from the member. Some like to buy local, some from RV Wholesaler. Buying local can be good if you are not handy, that way, your dealer can fix any issues without the DID YOU BUY IT FROM US statement.

Either way, remember to ask about the extended 1 year warranty for about $150.00. This is an extended warranty from Forest River, not the dealer. I think you have 10 days after the sale to get it activated.

Good luck with your decision....

welcome familyman

30% seems like a very fair offer. Depends on what all is in the pkg though.

Also, be aware that buying long distance like that can be a dangerous proposition. First off, you don't know exactly what you've bought until you see it in person. It could have a manufacturer defect. It could be weather damaged. Don't assume they're an honest bunch just trying to reduce their yearly inventory.
Secondly, be aware that if you buy it from someone other than who will end up servicing it, you may end up spending more over the years in labor costs. Many RV dealerships these days have two labor prices...one for those who bought their RV there, and another for those who didn't.

If you can buy something closer to home for close to the 30% they offered, and could get it yourself and save the transport cost, that would make up some of the difference. Even at that, I'd be willing to bet you could find somebody to deliver for a whole lot less though.

I can't help with a west coast dealer, but I bought my unit from Couch's RV. The price was great so I didn't mind driving from NM to OH to pick it up. The unit was exactly as advertized.

You might try RV Travel World in Sacramento, small place but been there a long time and great people.

X2 on what Jack said about RV-Travel World in Sacramento. Been dealing with them since the mid 1980's. Also welcome to the site. Also in the search box on this site type in Couch's RV, and/or RV-Wholesalers and you should find a lot of stuff to read both pros and cons.

Back in 2006, there was a "west coast" dealer who would sale the WCs at discounted prices. He was based in Wyoming. He was at least $5k cheaper than the local dealers so he got my business. I chose to pick up the trailer near the plant. Less than a year later, he got in a argument with the WC plant manager in Oregon over his pricing and dropped the line. Apparently it was cutting into the local dealers sales. He was great to deal with. Too bad he doesn't do the WC anymore. He does sell other lines.

Thanks for all the replies!

I am very handy as well as frugal so I have no issue with not buying local to save a few $ even if it means I'll need to handle my own warranty stuff.

Based on the comments I contacted RV Travel World of Sacramento but never received the promised (via automated email) quote. When we get closer I'll try them again.
