Truck engine cooling fan

Truck engine cooling fan
My 7.4 liter gas Chevy motor has a new fan clutch, but I have never heard the fan kick on. Recently while pulling our 5er up a 6% grade the water temp got a little high. Im pretty sure the cooling fan never kicked on.
So Im considering removeing the stock fan and installing a electric replacement from Flex-a-lite. Its supposed to add a few more horse power also. Anyone have any experience with these? They are pricey, but for a few more MPG and a cooler engine it would be worth it.

Re: Truck engine cooling fan
You probably need to go with a dual fan set-up, something like this: http://www.summitracing.com/search/Part-Type/Fans-Electric/Make/CHEVROLET/Engine-Type/V8/Engine-Size/7-4L-454/?keyword=electric+fan
It's not cheap, though.

Re: Truck engine cooling fan
I never had my cooling fan come on until I hit some steep grades in Nevada. The temp was 100 outside and the fan came on when the temp gauge went over the half way mark. You will know it when it comes on. It can be heard. It worked very well and in no time it was back to the normal running temp. I really like my diesel and wouldn't tow with anything else!

We got hills around here that will cause it to engage. We call it the after burner to help us over the hill.

Hmmm...my fan kicks on somewhat frequently in my '04 chevy duramax even when I'm going up a slight incline. Wondering if I have something going on that I should check out? My temps seem to stay pretty consistent.

Many years ago we received HUMVEES for the first time. We had never driven them. They had a Chevy engine in them at that time. Of course being a military vehicle they have no insulation on the fire wall. Doing 60 down the road and the fan kicks in. WOW. Scared the crap out of you. We thought the engine was coming apart.
