Campgrounds - Can anybody answer?
We are planning a trip to the NC mountains later this year. Can anybody comment on the deluxe sites that are mountain side at Campfire Lodgings? There are no premium sites left. If this CG does not work out can anybody comment on Mama Gertie's? We are getting to travel this time without kids which is why we chose these to CG's. I have read reviews but nothing specific about the sites. Thanks

Theres a couple of members that live in that area that I'm sure will chime in shortly, if they don't see this I'll pm' them and ask.
Looks like a nice resort.

Mama Gerties is built on a very steep hillside with the sites terraced up the hill. Standing on you site, you will see the roof of your downhill neighbor and looking up you'll see the wheels of the unit above you. It's that steep. That being said, The CG was building sites at the top of the hill that were supposed to be flatter. Don't know whether that happened or not. The store closed very early, like 6:00 p.m. when we camped there in August of '05.
Unless you are sold on mountainside camping, you'll get a better deal at the Asheville East KOA. Ask for sites 1, 2 or 3, or one of the river sites. It's cheaper than Mama Gerties with very level sites, a well stocked store that stays open till 8:00 p.m. until Halloween and nice folks that'll get you on your site with no fuss. We worked there for three seasons and would camp there in a heartbeat.

JSK, we camped at Campfire Lodgings last Thanksgiving. We stayed on what I think was premium site #5. All the other sites are simply down from the premium sites. ALL sites are very nice plus its a small campground. They have a great place to sit and look out over the mountains. I highly recommend it. There is a Publix about 4 miles from the campground and of course, the Biltmore is about 12 miles. Also, I read a review about how steep the road up was...no problem!! Hope you enjoy it. I am going to try and post a pic.

I'm with Milke, Campfire Lodgings is a nice place, and with good views. Kinda pricey, we favor Asheville East KOA. Someone posted a review about a steep grade at Mama Gerties, I don't think it is that steep. But I guess it depends on the TV and drivers experience. I get nervous at the coast when everything is flat, LOL. Since you cannot get reservations at Campfire Lodging, and that if you go to the KOA, I gaurantee that you will be satisfied.

BTW, if you read any of the reviews about Asheville East KOA they'll complain about the trains that "run all night" and start blowing their horns "a mile down the track". While we were there there might have been one or two trains a night during the week and none on week-ends. Unfortunately, there is a grade crossing right across from the CG.
Also, if you read about the noise from a biker bar behind Section A, the bar was closed last winter. No more noisy Saturday nites.

Thanks. Were looking some where secluded and quiet since we did not have the kids this trip. Regarding Campfire Lodgings, I have talked to people that have stayed in the 'P' sites which are good but I am wondering about the 'D' sites. Some reviews say they are not level and narrow. We can get one due to a cancellation - specifically D14. We can walk to the overlook but want a quite place - and yes there will be 2 people leaving for this trip and only 2 people returning from this trip (no extras)

D-14 should be a good site. We stayed in 2007 and we had either D-13 or D-14 if my memory serves. Very secluded and we had a very nice black bear that really thought he wanted some of our pizza that dripped in the oven causing us to vent the camper. He didn't cause any trouble and let us get some great pictures of him.
The hill on the way in caught me by surprise and I was just enjoying the scenery when I started up it; my tranny was just over 200 degrees when I got to the top (not a damaging temp, just hotter than I like to get it). I would have put the truck in low lock if I realized it was that steep before I got up it. Like stated earlier, not bad if you know it is coming.

Re: Campgrounds - Can anybody answer?
moo2613 - thanks for the info.. Unfortunately, after talking with the CG and they penciled my name for that site, I received an e-mail today saying that is not the site we will get - they put somebody else in it. When I talked to Andie the first time , she told me that since I was able to get a reservation due to another cancellation that the cancellation would be 50% of the stay instead of 100%. The second e-mail I got today stated the cancellation policy would not be changed - it will be 100%. It appears they say one thing and do another. I will try to contact them - it took 4 days for them to return a call the first time around.
Do you remember D-19 - it is the site by the office?

There was a older class A in it that gave me the impression it was the owners. It looked to be set-up almost permanent. I remember it because every time you leave, you have to drive right by it. If I remember right, it was rather small but nicely wooded on the door side (keep in mind it has been a few years), but you will have more traffic than other sites. It's not like this is grand central station, just all the people camping will be driving by on their way in and out.
We were supposed to camp with my in-laws when we went here. They were going to rent a class b and join us. Had to cancel 2 days early due to a funeral. No refund for the reservation. The staff is very friendly and nice, but they are sticklers about the cancellation policy.
