check all your locks

Post by GustheUsher on 9/10/2011, 2:15 am

I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. When we purchased our CAT, I did go over the whole unit using a RV checklist. The one thing I didnt do was check all the keys in ALL the locks. It is apparent that after 1 year I felt the need to watch TV outside, so I turned the TV inside around facing the outside door that opens and low and behold I do not have a key that fits that lock. I think I assumed(I know your never supposed to do that) that the baggage compartment key would fit it. When we did our walkthrough all the compartment doors were open and I locked them after I looked in them to see everything was OK....I never thought of opening the TV viewing door, since I didn't think it was needed. The only good thing is I am able to repin locks to fit the bagage key!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the baggage compartment locks on most trailers use the same key. We had them all replaced. If someone could open your inside/outside TV compartment, could they or a small child get inside your trailer? If so, that's why that door has a different key. The trash bin door on ours has a different key than the baggage doors because it would be possible for a child to get in through there..... and then open the trailer door.

FR might have considered the TV door to be more secure than the baggage doors and used the same keyway as the trash door. It's a double sided key about the same size and shape as the 751 key used on the baggage doors. You might try that.

Nope its says 305 on it, its the same key as my trash and all bagagge doors because it fits in the lock but "no joy". If someone pried it open they still couldn't get in because there is a piece of glass on the inside of the unit to stop bugs and whatever clawling in while the outside door is open. I also tried my main door key its double sided but the lock isnt.

My trash bin door is the same as the TV door key.

If someone broke the glass, could a child crawl through? I just keep thinking it has a different key for security purposes.... Or - maybe something is stuck in the lock.

Heck a full grown adult could through that opening. My trash bin door is the same as all my compartment doors? Good to see FR keeps up with QC..lol. I'll bet if we took a survey we would find everyone has different combinations between the main lock and all the other compartments?

On my '06 29RLBS the trailer came with 751 locks for all the storage compartment doors, double sided door key and a seperate double sided key for the trash door. I quickly went to my friendly Ace Hardware store and bought three keyed alike locks for the storage doors to replace the ubiquitous 751's that everyone seems to have.

Like schrowang I have three types of keys for my Wildcat. A double sided key for the main entry door to the trailer, a 751 key for the storage compartments, and a j301 key for the trash compartment.

I have four factory keys to juggle in the dark. 301=trash door, 751=compartments, double sided "L" shaped key for the back storage hatch, and of course the entry door. Kinda gets to be challenging in the rain or in the dark.

We replaced all of our key style baggage locks with combination style. The RV dealer did a double take on them when he was working on the WC.

Could you post a picture of them please? Also, where did you get them and how hard were they to install?

They were real easy to install. You can change the combination to any one that you want. Only takes a couple of minutes a door to replace. Just make sure that you measure your door thickness before you order so that you get the correct lock.

The picture they show is better than the one that I could take. This is the manufacturers website for actual specifications: http://www.combi-cam.com/

Those locks are great, I can't wait to change over all my baggage doors and garbage door, no more asking where my keys are to empty the garbage!!!
