Powerless California

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 9/8/2011, 2:32 pm

Got a call from my DIL a while ago. Southern CA is without power. I don't know how far north it goes. She says it started in Arizona, and all of Nevada is without power too. Traffic is almost at a standstill. My son can't leave work until he gets everything shut down manually, then it's kind of doubtful if he can make it through the traffic. She didn't know the cause of the outage. I'll try to catch the 9pm news to see if they say anything about it. Google might have something by now. It's been off almost 3 hours, I think.... and they don't expect it to be back until tomorrow afternoon. Oh, what a mess that will be. Wish I could beam our generator out there.

Some worker removed a piece of monitoring equipment in a substation, and shut down the whole Southwest including parts of Mexico..... He will hate to see his pink slip... Busted

Power outage was not that bad. It took me two hours to drive the 10 miles home. All the neighbors hung out on the street for an impromptu block party while listening to a battery powered radio. I hooked my fridge to my generator so that the food would not go bad. Can't believe that excuse to get one actually paid off! (emergency use in case of power failure) cheers

For my area of San Diego, power went off at 3:38 pm and came back on around 2:30 am

---------------------------

Safety reminder, don't ever hook your generator to the main panel to power the entire house unless you've installed a transfer switch, you'll be energizing the entire neighborhood circuit and it could kill an unsuspecting power worker trying to restore power.

Glad you got your power back. Talked with my DIL this morning, and they have theirs back too. Everything in the freezer was still rock solid. TV folks were saying to throw out milk, eggs, and leftovers.

Our son didn't get home from work until about 9pm. The drive home wasn't bad, all that extra time was work related.

I guess the only negative for us is that we are under a boil water order through at least Saturday. Two pumps lost power and water pressure dropped as a result. So just in case water got siphoned back into the system they want us to boil.

If that's the worst of my issues . . .

Hmmmm ....... DIL didn't mention a boil water order. Guess I'll give her a call. She's probably contaminated by now, if she didn't know..... and my son, and the granddogger.

I called my DIL. She said they aren't under the boil water order. She did say she would double check, though.
