Propane and Tires

Post by Richard Mondavi on 9/1/2011, 8:11 am

I’ve been having a problem with the propane flow into the trailer. The changeover regulator indicator wouldn’t go to green regardless of what side I tried to draw propane from. Since I was drawing gas from the passenger side of the trailer where the changeover regulator is, I replaced the changeover regulator. That didn’t work. I’ve had people tell me to open the bottle valve slowly. No, that didn’t work. I’ve had people make a number of different suggestions none of which worked. I finally decided to take the trailer into the dealer and let them fix the problem. Our appointment was this morning.

At 8:30 this morning we went to the storage lot to hook up the trailer. Even though it is a short 10 mile drive to the dealership I checked the tire pressure like I always do. All four tires were at 64 or 65 pounds of pressure. At the dealer’s lot I began lowering the landing gear and I noticed the front driver side tire was losing air rapidly. CRAPOLA! Now I have a tire going flat. Oh well, at least we’re not on the highway on a long trip and 1000 miles from home.

The dealer said he’d put the spare on and have the tire shop look at the bad tire. We left the trailer at the dealership and drove back home. A few hours ago the dealer called me and told me the bad news, all four tires are bad and should be replaced. Oh well, the tires are 4 years old so it was probably time to replace them anyway. BTW, when the dealer tried to put air in the spare tire, the rubber valve stem broke. Even though this is going to be expensive, the tire problem couldn’t have happened at a better place.

OK, back to the propane problem. As it turns out the red propane regulator on the other side of the trailer was leaking causing the changeover regulator to reduce flow. I don’t understand this since I was drawing propane from the passenger side where the changeover regulator is and the switch was pointing to that side too. BTW, the propane tank on the side with the red regulator was turned off. I never would have thought the red regulator was the problem.

Anyway, that’s how my day has been going. I don’t know how much this is going to cost but I’m sure my wallet is going to be a lot lighter by this evening.

What is it that made home say all the tires are bad ?

I've had a good and bad kinda day. Stress test I took this morning came out all clear. So did all the antifreeze in my beat around town truck. Freeze plug corroded and blew out.
Guess where it's located, Yep right behind the motor mount.
A 2 dollar parts gonna cost me a 100 bucks to fix. shucks......

Richard,

What kind of tires is you dealer going to install on your camper?

If possible, I'd go with Maxxis of you are going to stick with ST tires.

Even if the other tank is shut off, that hose is pressurized to the 2nd regulator, that's why it was leaking.

Sticking with ST tires. In reality we had good luck with the Duros that were originally on the trailer. I was going to replace the tires this past spring when we came back from Gulf Shores AL but I procrastinated.

This will probably be our last year with the Wildcat. We will be looking for something else to buy at the Winter RV show in St. Louis on Jan 13-15. There is a fall RV show next week too, so if we were to stumble onto a GREAT deal...who knows.

Now you tell me. Laughing I would have thought that with the selector switch turned to the passenger side and the gas bottle turned off on the other side, that the red regulator wouldn't come into play.

Be sure to check out the Montana's, ours is the 3150RL.

Good call on ST. Please tell me you got rid of the rubber stems and now have medal ones. When I put new tires on I put metal stems on and cured all the air losses I was having. Also they are safer.

Oldelmer1: that 3150RL is a great floorplan but I don't have a money tree in my backyard so we probably won't get a Montana. Also, the local Montana dealer simply doesn't deal.

Portagie1968: Sorry, I have rubber stems. I'm not too concerned though since I don't plan on having the Wildcat too much longer.

Richard,
When we bought ours at the Hershey show in Pennsylvania, they discounted the Montana $25K, and gave us $4K less than what we paid for the Wildcat 4 years prior. So, thats why we have a Montana today.

We also looked at the big Horn, same floor plan, but they wouldn't deal, even after I told them of the Montana deal. All they did was start bad mouthing the dealer and the Montana, so we just walked away...

It is a great floor plan but to us they went stupid in one area. From Laundry shoot to the bathroom sink should be all lino. Can see the water damage in a couple of years. The rotten carpet. The smell. Not a smart one. The other negative is that the sink is in the bedroom. DW no like. She sleeps late and likes the piece and quite provided with our floor plan.
