Re: Hurricane
Frank and Tom and everybody else who is on the East Coast, I hope you aren't close enough for the surge. We lived at 75 ft elevation on the MS Coast, about 10 miles from the Gulf. Got some mighty strong winds when we lived there, and I know that is a major cause of concern for you. Really hoping all goes well for all of you.

Re: Hurricane
According to the latest track, the eye will pass over Temple Mountain in south central NH about mid-day Sunday. We are about 50 miles east of the track in Windham, but we are being told that by the time Irene gets here she will be more on the order of a tropical storm, with winds from 39 to 60 mph. We're all battened down here; got the 10K generator ready to go, all deck furniture stacked and lashed down and some of the more fragile plants ready to move in to the house.
Due to the close proximatey of some very tall trees to the Cat, I'll be moving her out to the front yard by the street. For those of you who are suburbanites, or city dwellers, we have 2 acres and a pie shaped lot that is almost 900' deep, with 190' of frontage. House is set back almost 200' from the road.

Hang in there Frank....
We are just cloudy with just a little wind. I did go out yesterday and put plastic over the refrigerator & HWH vents on the camper, also the exhaust vent for the stove fan.
So, we are just sitting and waiting, 2 bathtubs filled with water, all outside stuff in the garage.
Take care everyone.....

At 8 o'clock central, they said that over 900,000 residents were without power. And that's just in Virginia and a small portion of North Carolina. Lots more to come.

Wish you guys would send some of that rain our way. We have not had a drop since May.
If the news agencies are correct, most areas on the East Coast came out better than expected. Glad to hear that. Stay safe.

Re: Hurricane
Well, the storm is pretty much over, we lost another Bradford pear tree, 3 down, 1 to go. Lots of little tree limbs all over the place with leaves everywhere. We went out this AM for breakfast and the creeks are all overflowing their banks, 1 house has a tree uprooted and of course, it landed on the house, lots of roof damage. Currently, the wind is blowing from the west, maybe 25 MPH, with a little rain here and there. I did walk around the house and all looks fine. Looks like tomorrow will be chainsaw time......
Surprisingly, we did not loose electric at all.
Hope you all are also doing fine.

Re: Hurricane
Tom,
Like you, we did not lose our electric, phone or cable today. For us in this little corner of NH, Irene was a fizzle. I think we might have had a few gusts up to 45 mph and it did rain quite hard last night.
All we have, now that Irene is on her way to Canada (eh), are some gusts in the 20 - 25 mph range.
We feel quite blessed that there was no damage here and our hear goes out to all those who have lost power, homes to flooding or loved ones. We pray that none of our forum friends had too much trouble with this whirly girl named Irene.

I'm glad it's over and downgraded. Now the cleanup begins.
Tom, all 3 trees down were Bradford pears? That's a shame - they are so beautiful when they are blooming and have such a pretty shape. Sorry you lost them.

Re: Hurricane
Ugh...about ten minutes after my last post power went out....Its still out at home...I'm at my office here in Rochester NH.
There are about 125000 customers in Maine with no power and about 80000 in NH still without power...
parts of Rochester are without power still...
We went seven days two winters ago without the juice during the December icestorm... no estimate on my home town yet on when we can expect it back....
The storm was really a flop around here other than the no power situation...Norhern NH in the white mountains and part of Vermont have been hit VERY hard by flooding...
Shrowang, glad you guys are all set I figured you would be in tough shape... aren't you in western NH
Tonight I have to go around and pick up all the lawn darts!

Yes, we had planted 4 of them in our backyard years ago. We spent the afternoon with the chainsaw and the mulcher, got probably half mulched up. Hopefully we will finish up tomorrow.
I guess its good that we at least get to recycle it for our flowerbeds.

Highwayman,
We live in Windham, which is exit 3 on I-93. We're in Rockingham county, so we were far enough east to miss most of the storm.
We really feel for those folks in VT. The pix on the TV of the rivers up there were frightening. They lost three of their historic covered bridges. On shot showed a covered bridge and then in the blink of an eye, it was gone; just dropped into the river. WOWser!
