Fresh Water Tank

Post by jsk on 8/24/2011, 2:27 pm

We returned after our short weekend trip and I was looking under the camper and noticed the underbelly material had some pressure on it below the fresh water tank. Some of the material had ripped around the main i-beam enough that I could see the tank. It looks like it is resting on the crossbeam that the rear stabilizer jacks are mounted to. I could not see that anything was holding it in place. The tank was leaning forward and the front corner was resting on the underbelly. Is this normal? After Irene passes I would like to take off the underbelly and support it differently. Any suggestions? I may find that it is supported when I get in to it but was looking some info. ahead of time. Thanks

Yup, this is a really good way to fix it. FR doesn't put too much stock in tank bracing.

If I remember correctly, MOPAR EARL fixed his also, and put a great pictorial in his post on how he fixed his tank from sagging.

I'm sure he will chime in.

Not sure about the 2009, but my 07 sure had a problem. FR knows about it, maybe the new trailers are supported better.

Regarding this mod, any reason why I could not use Advantech (subfloor) instead of plywood?

Not sure what it is. If it's strong as plywood and can handle sweat from the tank and the risk of a water leak, it probably would work.

Has anyone ever considered aluminum/steel slats Vs solid sheets of plywood, etal?

I wanted the whole tank supported. The tank is a soft plastic so if you don't support the whole bottom it'll sag everywhere it's not supported. Also wood is cheaper than aluminum and steel. At first I was going to use a sheet of aluminum but the cost changed my mind.

I wonder how well plywood would be able to handle the moisture. Maybe in the long run, aluminum would be better.

If U get exterior plywood and a little paint it will handle it very well.
