Scare Lights

Post by jamesb on 8/24/2011, 1:57 pm

"Scare lights" refer to the white outside flood light on each side of your camper. Now, asking the question; Does anyone leave those two lights on all night long when in a campground? Have you been to a CG near a camper that leaves these on from sun-down to sun-up? This really gripes me. Why would anyone want a "bright light" shining when camping? On our last trip, we were parked right next to a FW that turned these on all night. Basically, blinding us at the campfire, and lighting up the bedroom. Just wanted to know your thoughts. Or how to handle the situation next time, maybe a BB gun?? Question

I don't...for that reason. Don't know what or who they're supposed to scare anyway.

Just like TC I don't either. On one occasion we had stopped for the night in a campground that had side by side sites. The people next to us turned on their scare lights at dusk and wouldn't you know they had 2 of them on side next to us. As they were sittng there enjoying a nice camp fire lite up by 2 more scare lights I walked up and started a conversation about how their camp fire would be more enjoyable without so much light. The Lady informed me that her BH had been telling her that ever since they traded for a FW with scare lights. The husband got up and turned off the scare lights and said thanks for backing him up.

Took me a couple trips to even realize the opposite side was lighting up when I turned on that scare light. Could be that they don't know? If we do use a light during campfire it's the orange one. We usually go dark once we're sleeping, but if I'm up in the middle of the night I'll flip on the orange one just in case anyones watching, they know I'm "watching".

We were sitting by our fire one night, as were our neighbors. Their scare light on our side was on. I went over and asked very nicely if they would turn it off. He jumped up and apologized, didn't know it was on. We chated for a while and parted friends.

I replaced mine with stainless steel lights. Turned them on to test after the install, never turned them on again.

We've turned them on a couple times - for just a few minutes. Once because we heard strange noises and wanted to look through the windows to see if there was anything out there. Probably a raccoon, we didn't see anything.

Another time Scruffy wanted to check something at the utilities - he might have been shutting off the water because the temps were going down into the 20's. The light on that side of the trailer was just what he needed.

I think it's rude of people to leave them on all night. We will leave the porch light on all night sometimes, depending on the situtation...... I dont think we would even leave that light on if we had neighbors right next to us.

Other lights don't bother us when we're inside, we have reflectix in the big bedroom window, and no light comes through that. But, if we were trying to enjoy a campfire or just sit in the dark, we sure wouldn't like someone's bright lights shining on us.

I never have used those lights and I took the bulb out of the orange side light and replaced the step light with an led way up under the trailer so it lights up just the steps. I don't leave any lights on all night.

Sometimes Ill turn on the amber pourch light, but I use LED awning lights most of the time. I have them set up a timer, they come on at dusk and they turn themselves off at around 11PM, They just give off a soft glow but enough light to see to get in the coolers or walking around the side of the trailer. My trailer dosent have scare light on the drivers side, FR must have listened to us again and realized that they just arent need anymore sunny

Only used them a couple of times when I needed to check something outside. Then turn them off asap. We put down rope lights to border our immediate use area, usually out from the front, turn and across behind the campfire, then turn and to the back of the Cat. They don't seem to bother anyone when left on all night, and give off just enough light that when my Bagel wakes me up at 3am (every single morning) to go outside, I can take her for a short walk and not have to turn on any other lights outside.

Re: Scare Lights

Our scare light on the driver's side is in between the two slides, so the light from it really doesn't light up much of an area - except right where Scruffy needs light - on the utility post and sewer hook-up. FR should put a light somewhere near the hookups, down low, that doesn't light up a big area.

On the 31ts and 313re they have a light in the hook up compartment that lights things up pretty good to see hooking up the water and sewer hoses, but no scare lights on that side

I guess with the light in the hook-up compartment FR figures the scare light isn't necessary. We probably wouldn't miss the scare light if we didn't have it..... until we started hearing noises out there. :) We DO have an old spot light that my Dad used when he made home movies. That thing is BRIGHT! That's our auxiliary scare light.

Our 2010 29RLBS has both scare lights each side and a light in the docking station for hookups.

I use our scare lights but only for short periods of time to see whatever I'm working on at the time. I would never leave them on all night or use them often in a crowded campground.

We do use them at our private camp very often. Cornhole, ladder golf, horse shoes or repairs to the ATV's bikes etc... Even there, I never leave them on all night. I like to sleep in the dark.

I like your docking station behind a door. We don't have that on the older models. Would really be nice.

I don't use my scare lights much. I don't ever leave lights on overnight so I don't have to worry about bothering others. One time I did use my scare light to light up the site near me to help out the people that were backing in and setting up after dark. So they can be neighbor friendy sometimes.

The only outside lite I use is the amber step light and then only when I take the dog out at night then it's off unless I have a senior moment. When we were at a RV park in Texas there was a FW with out door spot lights (two) mounted on the corner of the living room slide roof and they had them on every night, glad we weren't near them, even had a couple of ladies in a state park that put a big light up in the tree on their lot and had it on all night, guess some folks are afraid of the dark.

I very seldom use my scare lights and never leave them on at night, but I do love them.I use them when I'm backing in to a camp site at night. They work very well for that. Cant see what's directly behind me but the DW helps with that, and I can see the sides. The DW has those round lights that hang from the awning (That I put a dimmer switch on),a rope light, and Tiki torches. They all go out by 10:30 or 11:00.
The BB gun thing sounds good. clown

Those clear elbows are the best! We don't have labels, and at first we didn't have a clear elbow. I think the guy who took us on the walk-through showed Scruffy how to dump the tanks. At least he's been doing them in the right order - something we couldn't be sure of before the clear elbow.
