What Do You Think?

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 8/18/2011, 7:05 am

Members,
What do you think about political discussions/arguments in the Wildcat Forum? I personally don't like to talk politics or read heated discussions about political stuff.

So.......... any opinions?

Tater

I like this forum because the folks here are friendly and respectful to each other. Personally, I could do without the political discourse. But, at least, put it in it's own sub-forum. That would give each member the option to view or avoid.

I don't see what purpose a polictical board on an RV forum would serve. Back in the day when RV.NET allowed such talk, it got downright nasty and disrepectful. Once two members of a forum get into a heated discussion on politics, those opposing views and disrespectfulness bleed over into the other boards on that forum. Please, no politics or religion.

I love the idealistic thought of freedom of speech, but there are things that do not mix on a friendly family orientated forum such as the wild cat forum, these in my mind are heated discussions of any kind and sex related topics. Talking about politics in a meaning full and constructive way (but with out pushing your views on to other people) is I think OK, because you have the choice not to read all postings. I don't think every one reads all postings that are listed, because they might not be interested in the subject matter,
Please note these are only my personal views Sean

I think we'd be better off without the political talk even though very tempting.

Being respectful to others, while discussing current events enlightens each of us. Sticking our heads in the sand helps no one. You should have put a fourth vote option,, which said "none of the above".

Would have preferred another vote option: No, keep politics on political forums this is for WC conversations.

I really enjoy political discussions but they can mess up a group intended for a non-political purpose.

All of these opinions are valid. One thing we have that most other forums do not have is a good bunch of people. We moderators have little to do because of the respect you all have for each other. Most political forums are a bash session. I believe the people here are better than that. At first I thought it might be good to have a political section, but on second thought, I don't think that would be good for our group. I think occasional input is good, as long as we respect others opinions. I think all political discussions should be kept in the Back Alley.
The above opinion is mine and mine only. Others might not agree. char124

Even though I like to keep up with whats going on in the policital world, I do have my own opinnions and Im willing to talk about them but this isn't the place to do it, Im sure there is some of us here that has a differant opinnion than mine and vice versa, Some are not as thick skined as others and it could very easily cause some hard feelings and this is not the place for it. We came here because we all have the same thing in common and thats camping and finding out good things about our Cats and the fine folks that are on here, so less just keep it that way. Laughing

Admin has created 32 different categories, all except one, which deals exclusively with our Wildcats and camping, etc. Back Alley is a category for all other topics.

I have mixed feelings. The back alley was created for anything other than Wildcat/camping. I would think that'd mean politics too. I'm not huge on politics, but I'm not against hearing what somebody else has to say on the subject. Doesn't mean I have to agree or obligated to post a response.

Censorship scares me more than political threads. My experience on other forums is, when moderators start dictating what can and can't be posted Vs moderating what is being posted, it creates a whole nuther problem.

I am fiercly political and have been tempted to put my two cents in a few times in the short time I've been hangin around here...but I cant stand log drawn out rants in thread format...they are almost impossible to follow noone ever really seems to get their real point across mainly cause most of us are talkers not writers...

Its much harder to eloquently write your opinion than to speak it...thats if when you do speak you are speaking the truth and whats in your heart... IMHO

Givin enough time and enough speach writers anyone can make most people believe or disbelieve any point of view

That being said who am I to say If you want to talk politics go ahead... I dont have to click on the post, if it gets my dander up I can reply or not...

As long as everyone agrees with my views, I don't have a problem with politics. backoff

Seriously though, I've seen politics and/or religion ruin other forums. As soon as one posts their strong opinions there will be someone from the other side who is offended and the downward spiral begins.

I feel the same as Richard on this subject.

TC has it right. We moderators are not here to censor. Most of you know what is acceptable and what is not. Enjoy all the forum including the Back Alley. cheers

Re: What Do You Think?

Post by Scruffy and Tater on 8/21/2011, 2:33 pm

Please don't worry anyone. None of the moderators have said anything about censoring any of the posts here. All we did was suggest these discussions be in the back alley, and we moved some stuff over to the back alley that had already started. We will continue to move stuff to the back alley if we feel it necessary. The phpBB people have some definite ideas about sexually suggestive posts or photos, and they can eliminate this entire forum if someone posts something of that nature, and that is censorship that we will be happy to comply with. But censoring political stuff - we won't do that, unless the discussion gets too heated and people start name calling or throwing insults or threats.

I posted the poll because I was curious about what other people felt about political stuff. I take full responsibility for that.

This forum is about fun people enjoying life and I think that we should keep it that way. There is a time and a place for everything and this is not the forum for political banter.

Let's bag the political talk and get back to our rigs. There are plenty of political forums out there where we can exercize our voices in that arena.

The bottom line is this:

If you do not want to talk about political events, then don't.
If you do want to talk about political events, then the back ally is the place for it.

JMHO, but I guess this is what those of us who don't want to see political opinion on this forum are afraid of. Beginning to see very polarized opinions and some edginess to the the posts.
