AC doesn't seem to work right

Post by tgorsuch on 8/16/2011, 3:25 am

We have a 2011 282RK on a 95 degree day inside temp will not get below 81 according to the thermostat. It has one 15K unit. Does anyone else have the problem?

welcome Maybe a dying AC. My 15K will freeze you out. Loss of Freon is my best guess if it is on high fan and air flows freely.

Yes and that's why we recently added a 2nd A/C. In June when the temps were 100+ our single unit struggled to keep the WC cool.

Thanks, the dealer can work it in this Fri. to check it out. It seems like 15K should cool it. It did in my old 97 Jayco. From what I read this one should be insulated better, of course it has bigger windows but they are tinted with the day/night shades and a bedroom slide. The Jayco was a wood frame with metal siding.

Surprised to here that. You are only 8 inches longer and probably better insulated then mine. The bedroom never gets that cool but with a fan the sleeping is great on a RV bed.

consider this, we also have an RK model so we experience this issue. In our RK the furnace and AC controlls are at the base of the steps up to the bedroom. On the opposite side of that very thin wall is our TV which when turned on supplies heat to the thermostat. (poor placement by WC) So the AC runs and runs and seems to never catch up if the TV is on.

Yes but that would still make the TT think is was not satified and make the rest of the trailer colder than the TT set point...IMHO

I had an issue with my 2010 Keystone TT not keeping up but found out it was evaporator iceing...have you noticed a reduced amount of actuall air flow from the ducts?

there is a sensor on most RV ac units that when the evaporator coil drops below freezing on its exterior it shuts the compressor off...until the frozen condensation melts away allowing air flow through the coils...this sensor has a cheap spring clip that should be placed on the second tube from the bottom center...when I looked at mine I found it at the top left and the evaporator coil was completely white with ice...placement makes a difference. also I would not be surprised if it could actually fall off of the coil and then allow iceing. You can see this iceing by shineing a light up beyond the air filter when removed...

If your ductwork seems to be moving the air ok then this may be another issue all together but its worth a look.

If you remove the ac (bezel) surrounding plasic cover on the insde and look up you will see a small disc with two wires attached...as a matter of fact mine had a card tied to it stating the proper location of the sensor...

Found the same issue on my friends TT as well after him telling me his ac would not keep up...

One other thing keystone (I know different manufacturer) says that RV ac units are only designed for a 15 degree temp drop...that is their on paper number, probably as to not have to make numerous ac warrantee repairs...I think thats a crock but just sayin...

I could have foregone the expense of a 2nd A/C and gone with a good fan but hubby insisted. Talk about sticker shock when we discovered that the WC as not pre-wired for a second unit in the bedroom. Shocked

I guess they made them different at some time. My 2011 31TS was pre-wired to the bedroom.

Our 2011 282RK is prewired. They are checking it out now. the dealer said that in 100 degree heat these newer AC's don't do to well.
He said it would cost $1300 for a 13K in the BR.
Hopefully they will find something wrong.
