Air Conditioner Hard Start Capacitor

Post by mountainmaxx on 8/6/2011, 1:30 am

Just a quick check with folks out there that have done this change. Dry camping above 6500' my yamaha generator(3000ie w/boost) had problems starting the a/c (15k). I purchased the "hard start capacitor " and am going to install later this weekend. Just unplug the two black wires and put them on the new unit?? They don't have a set order?? By the way, I did unplug the 'cat and removed the battery. Thank forthe help..

Joe.......

Yes, easy install; you can't mess it up. Good idea to unplug the cat, but the battery has no connection to the AC unit.

As Mr. Z said its an easy install.

I'm surprised the Yammie with boost wouldn't start your A/C at any elevation.

Let us know after the capacitor change if it helps you at elevation.

Glad to read this! I did this mod and read the instructions about 100 times over looking for the order to plug the wires in scratch

In the end I just figured it was interchangeable and went with it. Plugged it in, had someone spark the AC while I was on the roof watching and everything worked A-OK!!

Dumb question, but was everything else running off Gas when trying to run the AC (Fridge and H2O)?

Is there a down side to having the hard start capacitor? It seems like they would put one in at the manufacturer.

Cost. Would add another $30 to the cost of manufacturing times the number of units per year, that could be $1000's or 10's of thousands over what they have now. Only thing I can figure. Would be nice if maybe they offered a "boondock" or "dry camping" package with better batteries, better maintainer, capacitor, larger holding tanks. . ..

Thanks everyone. I haven't touched it yet. Vacationing on the CA. coast for the week minus the trailer. As far as the question of what items were running. Only the A/C and it cycled twice before kicking out. The day we tried it was the warmest of the year in Denver. Hopefully finish the install next week.

Mine actually came with the HS cap but it puked its guts out! The cap blew off its top and corrosion ate the terminals. Thankfully all it took was another cap.

My front a/c (Coleman 13.5K) seems to start very hard and sometimes I wonder if the compressor is actually going to kick on or not. Could a HS capacitor fix this? The rear a/c (15K Coleman) starts just fine.
