Re: Scotch
You're talking my language!!
One of my favorite things to do is sit around a lazy campfire with a good cigar and a glass of my favorite Scotch or Irish Whiskey.
Balvenie is very good. Aberlour is also very good. Not a big fan of real peety Scotchs
My favorite (that I can afford) is Macallan 12 yr.
One of my bucket list items is to fly to Scotland and tour all the Scotch distillaries in each region. I won't be driving, of course.

I'm not going to mix $50.00 Scotch with $3.00 milk for any reason. I also think that'd curdle the milk.
I do add a splash of soda water in my Scotch to bring out the flavors more though.

Re: Scotch
Your equasion isn't quite right. There are five of those $50 fifths in a gallon. That would probably be more like $250 Scotch and $3.00 milk. If I remember correctly, it did curdle. That's why the

Never thought about the 1/5th Vs gallon aspect. Now that you've put it in proper perspective, it cheapens the milk addition even more.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a tradition/custom that can stay in the past...yuck!! If I wanted curdled milk, I'd buy cottage cheese.
Interesting read on Milk in Scotch...

BTW, my dad would be 102 in Sept if he were still around. He wasn't a Scotch drinker though. Don't know where my taste for it came from.

I hear you on not liking peaty scotch. My brother got me a $50 bottle of 17-year old Bowmore (an Islay region scotch), very peaty overtones, it still sits in the cupboard.
I'll agree that the Macallan 12-year is good, but the 18-year is waaaaay better. I have both in my house, the 12-year for the so so people and the 18 for my favorites. Hmmm, that would be me! :-D

Re: Scotch
That was funny, TC! I think I would rather just skip the milk. Scruffy and I don't care a lot for Scotch - prefer good old Kentucky Bourbon if we want a straight-up-undiluted-drink.
I don't think my Dad put sugar in his Scotch and Milk. Sounds bad just saying it.

Last summer when we went down to Ft Knox to see my son graduate from basic training, we took an extra day for a side trip to the Maker's Mark distillary. They were hawking a new product called Maker's 46. I tried a sample of it and thought it was pretty good. Good enough for me to buy a bottle. But as long as I have a choice, I'll pick Scotch over Bourbon or Sour Mash any day.

I love this part of the link TC posted:
FYI, we've been feeling more than a little nauseous since we drank this bad boy. And we're not talking "post roller coaster after too many hot dogs" nauseous, either. On the subject of Scotch, Laphroaig is probably the most nasty thing I've ever tasted. Go out to the peat bogs, dig up a hadful and put it in your mouth. That's Laphroaig.

Saw this on the news today...$200,000 for a bottle of Scotch.
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/20/bottle-of-whisky-sells-for-200000/?&hpt=hp_c2
Too bad it hasn't aged for 62 years. Unfortunately, it stopped aging as soon as it was bottled. But with only 12 bottles produced, its very rare indeed!! Wonder what they did with the rest of the barrel?

Re: Scotch
Its funny how you totally forget about things sometimes for years! (at least 35 in this case) but I remember my Papa drinking milk and scotch...
now this is Gross but what he really liked was scotch and goat milk...
I guess that was the norm in scottland as goats were in & cows were out...
I dont mind a Scotch now and then, but I really like good old Tennesee whiskey...
On that note I got a bottle of that new JD honey last week....
problem is...its gone already!

I've never much cared for JD. My brother drinks nothing else. However, George Dickel No 12 is, in my opinion, an excellent Tennessee Whiskey. I'm not a much of a bourbon fan with a few exceptions. I once found a bottle of 12 year old Old Charter. It was extremely smooth, what you may call a sippin whiskey. I've never found another bottle and I can't get any reply from the distiller.
Another one I like is Forty Creek. Very smooth stuff.

To me scotch is like beer, I like them all just some are better than others. I prefer a single malt but there is nothing wrong with the blended. Bourbon- will drink to be sociable but will not pick it if scotch is available.

I had a buddy who's preference was JD. For the longest time, I'd buy him a bottle of Gentleman Jack for Christmas. If he offered I'd drink it, but it was never my preference. Finally, I got smart, and started giving him a bottle of Scotch for Christmas. He never complained, and when he offered some to me, neither did I.
