It is handy, especially on long trips. Helps to cut the boredom in those 15 hour drives.

Re: moved up in the world
My DW bought a smart phone at Christmas, and still can't figure out how it works. She says you need a PhD to operate it. Guess it's too smart.
BTW, I saw a commerical that says people use smart phones to do dumb things. Now, that wouldn't be you, would it??

Re: moved up in the world
Welcome to the 21st century, lol.
Now, there is an app that you can get from the MARKET which will allow you to tether your laptop to the smart phone. Its called pdanet. You can download it and try it for 15 days, then it blocks out the SECURE sites, ie, anything you have to log into, until you buy it for $15.99.. As long as you have a signal, you can use it and it works VERY GOOD.
Verizon doesn't like you using it, but they cant really stop you, at least not yet.
When your ready to try it, let me know and I can help you get started with it.

Re: moved up in the world
Congratulations on your neew purchase. I purchased a Droid about a month ago and we had it on a 2 week camping trip to Myrtle Beach. It is amazing what they can do. Mine is from Verizon and it locked up on me today at the office and I thought I had done something wrong. After listenting to Verizon's technical spport for 15 minutes who kept asking me to put it on charger ( my charger was at home) and my insistance that the battery was fully charged, I gave up and ran down to the verizon store. The gentleman there simply took out the battery and reinstalled and all was fine......common fix for computers when they lock-up and I should have figured it out and felt kind od sheepish. Thought I'd pass it along. Good luck and enjoy.

Re: moved up in the world
We had one of the first DROID X's by Verizon that came out last July. It lasted 1 year and then the ear speaker stopped working. At first it was funny, HELLO, HELLO, hmm no one there. After this happens a few times, we tried the speaker phone and someone was there.
Luckily, we don't normally, had gotten the extended warranty, so Best Buy gave us a new Droid x2, a little faster, and a little bigger, BUT STILL NICE...
TLC, yes, easy fix, pull out the battery... But never on a computer, just push and hold the power button for 10 seconds.

Yes......... lol.... that's what I meant, not to pull out the battery but to cut the power for re-set.

Great on long trips. Got one for DW last year for the long road trips to Michigan. She's now lost without it.

The GPS on my Droid is better than my Garmin. Also, if you don't have Sat radio, just get the Pandora addon and make your own stations. Eats battery though, so be sure to have it charging.

It is against the law in the U.K. to use a mobile phone whilst driving £60.00 fine ($97.00) plus 3 points on you license.

Thanks for the info Tom! My phone came out of the box able to connect up to 5 devices to it via wifi. But when you have a 2GB data limit, I won't be doing any tethering. lol Verizon and At&t both got rid of their unlimited data plans. So for new people and people upgrading, you have to pick a data plan and the more data you want, the more it costs. So I happen to be an upgrader just after the new policy. Lucky me.

BTW, the Droid 3 is the best phone I ever had. It's fast and you can listen to music, surf the web and text all at the same time. My old phone could only do one thing at a time.

That's funny. I'd be lost without ours, too. We just put our old Lowrance GPS to rest and replaced it with a Garmin nuvi. Can't wait for our trip to CA to give it a good tryout.

Re: moved up in the world
You need to check out the XDA forums....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1193
I have an Moto Atrix on AT&T and the thing is amazing. Dual Core 1GHz, 48GB of storage (16 internal), 4G. I got the Lapdock. It is nice for camping where you don't want to use the onscreen keyboard or 4" screen.
If you figure out how to "root" the phone, you can tether without a tethering plan (in lieu of PDAnet).

I don't drive the entire 15 hours. I was talking about the time I'm resting and someone else is driving. I do talk while driving, but never txt. I don't allow others to txt and drive when I'm with them. I've taken the phone from more than one person and threatened to throw it out the window if they tried to txt again while driving. Made them mad, but I don't really care.

I'm not really sure. My son loaded it for me before I left on a trip. It seems to be associated with Google Maps. It's simply called "Navigation". As with all GPS's, it will occasionally turn you in the wrong direction, but it's still better than my Garmin.
Sorry for the long delay in reply. This was lost to me somehow.

Hi Earl,
I believe being able to connect up to 5 devices via WIFI will cost you another $20 dollars for 2 gig per month, and you can call and cancel it at the end of your trip, if its less than 30 days, or 2 Gig. At least that is what it was the last time we did the WIFI thing. Its not part of your data plan, its a special plan just for the WIFI. We were out for 3 weeks and barely used 1 gig, then canceled after we got home.
If you do a lot of interneting while camping, you might want to look into the WIFI plan.

Re: moved up in the world
When we were in Charleston, SC one night there was fire and police cars just screaming up the road. So we were really curious as to what was going on. So, a quick search on the DROID Market, and found a police/fire scanner App. Turned out to be a dryer fire in a mobile home.
There's all kinds of neat stuff out there. Be sure to get the flashlight app too, it turns on your flash so you can see at night.
