Alright, I just gotta ask . . . Ford or Chevy(GMC)?
Here's the situation. Been a long time Chevy guy. Mostly because it's what I was raised up on and partly from experience (I used to work on the road a bit and we used Ford, didn't like them as much as the Chevy's we used). However, that was then, this is now.
Time has come to look at replacing the TV. The 6.0 Chevy just doesn't cut it out here in WA. In ND it did just fine pulling, but mountains are a completely different story.
So, I ask you. What is better? I'm looking at Ford and Chevy but you Dodge lovers feel free to add your 2 cents worth. Not a big Dodge guy and that is based on the Chrysler that my wife owns, no real life experience with a truck. But that Cummins may be enough to lure me in!
To keep it "fair" below are some criteria that I'm looking for in our next rig.
- Cab Room/Comfortability - We are a family of 5 with a 14yo that likes to occasionally bring friends. Seating 6 would be nice, but not 100% necessary (this is impossible with some of the higher end trucks). Which of the big 3 offer the most "personal space" so my kids don't kill each other?
- Power - Pulling a 32qbbs. Hoping to venture into Canada and northern Cali in the near future. All will get me over the mountains (my 6.0 proved that) but which one will do it with the least amount of effort?
- Reliability - A lot of posts on here about Ford problems (ERG valve or something!??!) has me nervous. Every company produces a lemon here and there, but are there any big things to watch out for? Certain years or models?
- Features - DVD, Back Up Cameras, Navigation, Exhaust Brake. . . . Who's got the coolest stock gadgets?
Ok, OK, that's about it for now!
Time to hit Autotrader.com to begin the search and look at prices. Going to be hard to get rid of a truck that's perfectly fine AND PAID FOR, but should help out in the long run.
As always, thanks in advance!

Well, if you’re talking a new truck, then the Dodge Megacab with the 6.7 diesel has the most room and more than enough power for mountains. The one big plus for the Dodge diesel is that they don’t need to use DEF. My rub with Dodge is they build great engines, but the rest of the vehicle falls apart around it as the numbers on the odometer get higher.

Well, for this part, you're going to get everyon's opinion based on what they have had or have. I think in general, they are all very well built these days, so it's going to come down to what you prefer.

Yup...the MegaCab by Dodge will win hands down on interior room. Next to that, the Ford has typically had the most room, but it is probably by so little that again, it will come down to personal feel.
- Power - Pulling a 32qbbs. Hoping to venture into Canada and northern Cali in the near future. All will get me over the mountains (my 6.0 proved that) but which one will do it with the least amount of effort?
All the diesels will be just about the same, especially the newer ones. The differences will not be something the average driver will really notice in the end.
- Reliability - A lot of posts on here about Ford problems (ERG valve or something!??!) has me nervous. Every company produces a lemon here and there, but are there any big things to watch out for? Certain years or models?
I think you pretty well hit the nail on the head here. In general, it seems that Chevy has had the best track record, but even they have had their problems. I have a 1st gen 6.4L Ford (the first of those engines), and had my radiator replaced at about 25,000 miles, but since then, not a single issue. It's been a great truck so far (knocking on wood!!!).
- Features - DVD, Back Up Cameras, Navigation, Exhaust Brake. . . . Who's got the coolest stock gadgets?
Stock gadgets depends on the trim you end up with. And the year of the truck. The newer Fords (2011 and 2012) in the Lariat and King Ranch are just about as slick as you can get. And the leather seats are just about to die for...very nice!
Ok, OK, that's about it for now!Time to hit Autotrader.com to begin the search and look at prices. Going to be hard to get rid of a truck that's perfectly fine AND PAID FOR, but should help out in the long run.
My advice is to hit the truck dealers and really look them over. From a performance standpoint, they all are pretty close. It's going to come down to the creature comforts in the end, I think. My preference...the Ford. But again, that's based on years prior to 2010. I have not looked at the newest Chevy's or Dodges. Good luck, and happy hunting!
As always, thanks in advance!

Richard,
All vehicles start to fall apart when they get into the high numbers. I didn't have a problem with my '04 until I hit 100K. Not the normal stuff like tires, brakes and shocks. But, you're gonna see a new water pump, new universals, new drivetrain seals, etc., etc. Seen it happen to Fords, GMs, Chevs and Rams. Only way to avoid it is to get a KW or a Peterbuilt, preferably with a Cat engine, 10-speed compound tranny and a Spicer two-speed rear.
LOL

Even the BIG RIGs have all the problems you mentioned. I have friends that are owner/operators and even with all their preventive maintenance things seem to break, just seem to get more miles before they do. Just my .02 worth. Jim

If you get the History channel on TV, this Sunday, they are having a competition with all 3 brands. I'm not sure if they are using the new 6.7 HO for the Dodge or what, but should be an interesting show.
If you've never seen these guys do tests on vehicles, they really run them hard through the tests.
My advice, test drive all 3, and see what you think....

Test driving an '08 GMC tonight. I think they are a little high on the price though (asking $43k, price on website is different) , but it's just a test drive. Work with them enough and maybe they'll drop it down. They also have a Dodge there that I'm going to put through the paces too. Links to both below. This dealer is historically on the high end of the price, but I've heard they do negotiate down quite a bit.

Well, not many parts being used with it just sitting in the garage. Although Sharon entered into a Free $100.00 gas card giveaway from KOA and SHE WON!!! Price of oil is down to $86.73 today, WAHOO!!! cheap gas/diesel here we come.... Sorry, back to OP's topic.
If you know anyone who can get you a friends & family coupon, that would make a big difference.
That price for the 08 is HIGH, we paid a just a couple thousand more for our 2011 3500 RAM Laramie.

They are high on the Dodge, but seriously, the new High Output Dodge's are going to be the way to go. The Mega-Cab gives you the room of a Ford with the Cummins engine!! Keep in mind, I just had my Cummins rebuilt due to fuel in the oil (bad injector and previously bad mechanic were the cause) and it cost me $10K. Truck has 205,000 miles on it with a brand new engine.

was a Ford man all the way had a 99 250 superduty went with the 2500 dodge ctd what a difference Dodge also enlarged the rear doors on the quad in 2010 so its a true quad. The mege cab is bigger but I dont believe you will need it. Also Dodge talked, Ford only moved a little in price which also drove me to a dodge at this time in my life

Ford, Dodge, Chevy, all make good trucks to tow your WC. Just depends on what you like and what kind of a deal you can get.

The mega cab does have the most room, but the Ford and Chevy also have plenty of room in the crew cabs. The fords are a little tall for keeping the cats level while towing at least that's what I've read from most of the Ford guys. They all have enough power to tow any Wildcat that you want to buy so you don't need to worry about that. They all ride like automobiles not trucks so there is no difference there. I am partial to the duramax the one I have now is my second one and I wouldn't have any other brand, just my opinion. I'm not a big fan of the dpf but depending on what state you live in you can delete that system. The dmax/allison trans combo is hard to beat.

Yeah, they did that in 2010. It's called the Crew Cab. The extra room in the rear passenger area is welcom.

Drove the GMC and Dodge tonight both were NICE rides. Going to be a long tough decision. At this point the GMC is leading, it was cherry, loaded to the gills. They are about $5k too high on it, but hopefully we can make that up through some negotiations. Dodge seemed to have more "gadgets" (USB, 110v outlet, misc storage cubbies; . . . .) but the Duramax felt a little better under the foot. Both would have NO problem handeling anything I would ever throw at it.
Stay tuned! Still trying to convince DW that we need to upgrade our PAID FOR truck, she's an accountant.

You will not go wrong with the 08 GMC. I have the exact model and wouldn't trade it for anything. That price is also more than what I paid for mine in 08 but at that time was when the there was a big sell off for auto manufacturers and there were fantastic deals to be made. Used auto prices have climbed since then. Do a search on Kelly Blue Book for your area. I had looked and there is a new body style 07 in Yakima with only 26k miles for $ 37,900 ( It is a long bed ). Show your wife how much $ you just saved and she'll jump at it. Good luck in your search.

Thanks Huber! I did see that one in Yakima. Unfortunately the long bed won't work for us due to garage limitations. Used Car prices are crazy for trucks and SUV's. Prior to us looking at replacing the tow vehicle we were thinking of upgrading my wifes car to a Yukon or Suburban. Good luck trying to find one of those used for the right price. . . .

Re: Alright, I just gotta ask . . . Ford or Chevy(GMC)?
I just traded my 03 GMC in on a 2011 Silverado, both my wife and I have owned all GM products, this is my 4th truck and she's on her third vehicle and yes regular maintenance does play a big part in no matter what you get. I looked at maintenance over time and we have had very little to do. My wife's Envoy had over 200,000 miles on it before it's first non maintenance repair and that was to replace a sway bar bracket. The original set of brakes were replaced at the same time, but that's a different story. My 03 had about 180,000 and not a day in the shop. When I went looking at the 03 I decided that I was going to give every manufacturer a fair chance so we test drove everybody. Chevy just seemed to be the most comfortable of the rides. That said, my truck will seat six people, but I think it would be most comfortable with 5, the ride is smooth for a 3/4 ton truck, I would have like to have gotten the diesel engine, but it just wasn't in the budget.

If I could, I would in a hearbeat. I've read a lot of good things about it. Very quiet, very smooth, all the power you need. I've seen where they are up to at least a "job 2" (meaning it's been updated with the latest flashes and probably some other goodies). Ford done real good with this one.

For 2011, Ford has its own in-house designed diesel. It's the first time they have not had the Navistar/International diesel in their trucks. When you start this truck up, you can hardly believe it's a diesel it's so quiet. So far, the reviews on it have been very good. Some minor issues as one might expect from any first generation model, but nothing serious (that I've heard about). And the power of the engine more than makes up for the light gearing (that done to help with mileage that everyone always complains about). But if I had my druthers, I'd like to see at least a 3.73 in them also.
