New Tires
First topic message reminder :
We had a blow out on our way home today. Thinking of changing all 4 out. we have the factory tires on them still. have a few questions what is the advantage of going to load range E over keeping the Load D that I have now. Also where is the best place to go buy new ones.I have been looking through the posts and see eveyone goes crazy picking new brand of tires. The ones I have now dont shake or wobble at the high speeds. I know most people say to change the factory ones. Any help would be great. I cant believe after a year and a half i had a blow out already.

Re: New Tires
I read that if you have rubber valve stems (standard on the wildcat) the tire monitors can actually cause a tire blowout (the sending unit bends the rubber valve stems due to centrifugal force). Anyone have experience with this?

Re: New Tires
No experience with that. We've had metal stems since 2007. I can see how that could happen. Thats a good tip. Thanks for the heads up.

As far as wheel chocks, no they will not fit, I use these.

Re: New Tires
Our 2010 31TS has 33" axle spacing. Afer a blow out last week we are moving up our plan to replace the factory tires with LT's. We want Michelin XPS Ribs but still unsure if there will be enough space between the tires, as it is now there is about 2-1/4". One alternative is changing size from 235/80/R16 to 225/75/R16. I thought about 245/80/R16 but have doubts about width. Has anyone successfully installed 235/85/R16 with 33" axle spacing? Thanks

I was also looking at the 225/75/R16 size but I'm finding that they aren't rated much more load capacity wise than what I have on the ST225/75R15 size I'm currently at.

Re: New Tires
I went to the 235\85r16 Michelin Ribs from some unknown Chinese 235\80r16. I have sold tires for 30 years & I just didn't want something on my Cat that I don't trust. We have 34" spacing on our axles. I know Mopar_Earl said that they are only 33" but who knows with Forest River. haha! I have 2 1\4 space between the wheels, I use Roto-Choks ordered for that spacing. As for the tire sensors (TPMS) I have the TST 507 System. You must use metal valve stems because the sensor caps are heavy little gizmos. It is neat to watch the temps & pressures rise as you go down the road.

I ordered a different block for mine and if it does not work these look like a great way to go.

This may be a rumor, but this is what I heard...Some tire shops in certain states will NOT mount a LT(truck) tire on any trailer, it must say "trailer use only" on the sidewall. Anyone else ever hear this?

Never heard of it but possible due to liability.

I do not know about the tire blowout with rubberstems and tire monitors BUT rubber stems are a weak point in any case. I recommend replacing them with metal stems even if you do not have tire monitors.

Re: New Tires
Absolutely, Glen. We replaced the rubber stems long before we bought the tire sensors. The rubber stems had cracks in them, and when we were getting the trailer inspected for the first time, the inspector noticed and suggested we replace them.

I have my Cat inspected where I purchased it. Not sure if the auto inspectors would do the camper, so it's just easier to go to my dealer. Where do you have yours done Tater?

Re: New Tires
There is a rinky-dinky shop near here that does inspections, including trailer inspections. I really don't know what they do there besides inspections - car repairs and tires maybe. I think our inspection is due this month. Scruffy will be home next week, then the following week he will be in Saint Louis, so I guess he's got something to do at least one morning.

Why do they inspect U. Curious. We have no stinking inspections.
