Nasty accident involving 5th Wheel
Here's a nasty accident that occurred between a moving van and pickup/fifth wheel a few hours ago just south of here on Hwy 395. One fatal. It's a bad section of road with lots of accidents where drivers cross the center line. I hate driving that section of road for this very reason.

That makes me feel sick. All that's recognizable is the air conditioner. Horrible!

If I were the occupants of either pickup, I'd surely be giving thanks for being alive. Amazing they were not injured much more severely.
Keep us posted if you hear the reason they think the van drifted out of his lane.

If that happened over here the road would have been for at least 12 hours, and the traffic in both directions would have to find there own route around the problem.
But it is always bad to here of incidents like this.

We all face it when we buckle up and for some reason people will pass you when you are towing and jump in front of you thinking that you can stop on a dime.

That photo is a good reminder of why no one should ever ride in the fifth wheel while traveling. In a major accident there is nothing left of the trailer.

That Photo put shivers up my spine I always try to stay as close to the right edge of the roadway (stay out of the trash) to help minimize evasive manuveres as possible. But sometimes there is no escape. when I go anywhere I usually drive as if everyones out to get me it helps. Also I noticed that the fivers Hitch was ripped completly out of the truck and still hanging off the pin couldn't have been a lippert frame?

I also drive like everybody is out to kill me and normally they are. I think a person should at least know your name before they try to kill you. Anyways, I feel for the rv person. I hope they weren't full timers as that was probably their home as well.

onetonford/Mopar_Earl, I don't think people hate you that much.
I think your driving style like mine is called very defensive, trying to think of what that idiot might do next.

I remember my dad telling me about defensive driveing when he was teaching me how to drive. I remember at the time how I poo poo'ed it. I have become my dad in that respect. It amazes me how some people drive the same towing or not. I do the same as the rest of you, stay to the right and slow down.

Re: Nasty accident involving 5th Wheel
How many of you have thought about "winning and loosing"? That is when I am driving down the road, I look at the vehicle coming at me and say to myself, would we win or loose in a head on.
Example:
1. Driving our TV and WC, coming toward a logging truck,,, we loose....
2. Same driving toward a Honda Civic,,, we win.
Of course you both loose, because someone is going to get hurt or killed, but it makes me think about which vehicle I drive going on windy narrow two lane roads.
1. Our Ford Focus, that looses to about any other vehicle.
2. Our Ford F350 which wins with most other vehicles.
Example:
1. Driving our TV and WC, coming toward a logging truck,,, we loose....
2. Same driving toward a Honda Civic,,, we win.
Of course you both loose, because someone is going to get hurt or killed, but it makes me think about which vehicle I drive going on windy narrow two lane roads.

Re: Nasty accident involving 5th Wheel
I just read today's edition of our local paper (the one linked above). They had a close up of the trailer damage. The fifth wheel hitch was still attached to the trailer pin box. It failed at the rails!

Re: Nasty accident involving 5th Wheel
I don't know if Scruffy conciously thinks in winning or losing terms. We've been buying tanks for years, so in many cases are on the "winning" side. Uncle Sam is going to put an end to that though, I'm afraid. At least in terms of cars. When we can't get a big car anymore (Mercury quit making the Grand Marquis), we'll probably have two pick-ups. One might be an F150 for just around town.
