What is your MPG rating?

Post by bighornram on 7/26/2011, 10:47 am

I have an 05 ram 3500 SRW with a Roktech sensor and a Quadzilla chip. Empty I get 24 mpg and pulling my 28RK I get 13 mpg.

I thought it might be fun to compare tow vehicles and how thirsty they are. Could be a valuable resource for someone shopping.

Currently I'm wondering how increasing the weight of the trailer affects the mpg. I'm considering a new rig and going from the dry weight of 7700 to 11000. Maybe someone can cast some insight on this.

With the rig in my signature, on my trip from Texas to Colorado and grossed out on weight I got between 7.5 and 9.5 mpg.

I can only average around 9.5 to 10 mpg. Last year with our Cat, I got an average of 12-13 mpg. Same truck.

Jeff,

You will see and feel a difference, for me, I got so use to the Wildcat being there, that I would forget it was there as I went down the road. When we traded the Wildcat in for the Montana, the Ford said WHAT YOU DOING TO ME!!! lol...

Anyhow, we averaged 12MPG with the Wildcat and the 06 Ford SB 4x2 PSD,18 MPG without the Wildcat.

We never pulled the Wildcat with the Dodge we have now, but we still get 11 -12 MPG whether we are pulling the Montana or not. We only have 5200 miles on the Ram so I hope it gets better.

Our trip we just completed, going +7500 miles, over hill and dale, I averaged 9.8 mpg. Old '02 Dodge 3500 Quad cab, dually, 4:10 axle pulling approximately 13,500 lbs estimated. In mountains with good climbs, it would get down to 7.5 and on level Interstates, staying 60-65, I would get near 12.0. Fuel prices ranged from a low of $3.44 to a high of $4.49.

Your question has a lot of variables. How fast are you going and how much weight are you pulling, and what terrain are you driving, head wind or tail wind, etc.
Empty, no head wind or tail wind on level ground, going 70 mph I get 18.5 mpg. At 55 mph I get 21 mpg.
Pulling our 29rlbs at 60 mph over level ground and mountains we average 13.3 mpg. We have 33K miles on our truck, and the fuel mileage has stayed the same from the day we bought the truck. I ordered our truck from the factory with a manual transmission, posi traction, 3.73 differential, 4x4, F350 one ton, with 6.0 diesel engine.

When I went to coast last it was the worst I have ever had at 9.3 by the trucks meter. when I filled and did it by calcalation and was 12.5. Found the fuel filter was plugged and installed new filter.
This last vac went to Willits and the gauge said 10.3 need to fill it up and do the math thou. I have gotten as high as 14.5 pulling the cat and empty as high as 20.5 going to Cave Junction Oregon and comming back with a loaded bed of wood tools and a car trailer with a 65 Ford f-100 it got 18.5 of course I only go the speed limit of 55 due to the fact it has 4.10 gearing and the sweet spot is about 1900-2000 RPM.

Anywhere from 7 to 11 depending on circumstances. Running empty, I average almost 11 mpg. V10s are gas hogs.

I am at about 3500 miles of a bout a 4700 mile trip. Mo to Tx, Nm, Co, Wy, Mt, Nd, Sd, and then back home in Mo. Seen as low as 6 and as high as 9.7 mpg. Truck computer shows 8.5 overall average on this trip. 60 mph on highway.

Have not checked in a while, but towing I got 12.6 MPG in just over 7,000 miles in 2009. Bob tailing I get 21-23 at 65 MPH. The computer on the dash says 14.7 overall. I think that has never been reset and is lifetime for a little over 110,000 miles.

10 - 12 towing and 18 - 20 solo. Got as high as 13 towing. That was at mostly 55 mph. Seems to be the sweet spot. At 65 mph always around 11 mpg. I figure it's higher rpm's and increased wind drag that hurt it at higher speeds.

I'll have to ask Scruffy what we get. We don't use the truck for long distance, so can't say what we get for that. In a few weeks we'll be driving the truck to CA and back, then we'll be able to determine what our MPG is in 3 different situtations - long distance towing, long distance (no towing), and around town (if Scruffy even checks that).

10 - 12.5 MPG when towing depending on the terrain. Non-towing I get 18 MPG strictly highway driving, and 12.5 MPG around town. These numbers are sooooo much better than what I would get with my old 2002 Dodge with the 8.0 liter gas engine and the 4.10 rear end. With that truck I would only get 5.5 to 6.5 MPG when towing the Wildcat.

i get 7-9 towing and 14-16 hwy on my GMC 2500HD 6.0 gas, I tow @ about 60-65mph. I tried using premium fuel last year on our trip to see if it improved mileage or power, but I think I just spent more money on fuel without any improvement.

Anywhere from 9.5 to 13 towing, to many variables to really give a hard figure. Get from 17 to 22 empty, again depends on conditions and how I drive.

I am tickled pink with my diesel, just did Ontario to Tennesee and averaged 18 mpg there and 13 home...75 mph didn't help, old truck could NOT have done that trip. At 5-8 mpg on the old truck we would have gone broke, sure am happy with my suspension upgrades!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
