KIllAVolt solved my over voltage portable generator damage to my RV!

Post by superbman on 7/22/2011, 7:18 pm

Just received and installed a KillAVolt over voltage protection device. Only 5 minutes to install. Will sense voltage over 145 Volts and shuts generator off. Mine was caused by an AVR or Automatic Voltage Regulator that failed. Luckily only damaged my inverter which i was able to get replaced under warranty. I have heard of others with their generator producing over voltage, but never gave it thought. Found this item through rv.net website. or go to supergenproducts.com to purchase. Now i can rest easy, no more damage to my appliance.[b]

welcome to the forum from the U.K.
I will have to look into the Killavolt, because I have 230v + 120v in my Cat, powered from the Genset or shore power.

welcome

I use a surge protector that disconnects if the voltage is too high or too low. Also lets you know if the power isn't wired correctly. So it's 4-way protection. I use it on shore power as well as on my genset.

Re: KIlOVolt solved my over voltage portable generator damage to my RV!

Post by superbman on 7/23/2011, 9:42 am

Low voltage is rarely a problem with a portable generator and only go thru a minimal brownout during shut down which is why unplugging the generator is recommended by all mfgs. When a generator goes to low voltage is usually is a quick and sudden shutdown of the engine from overload. A long duration of low voltage rarely happens. But if the regulation fails, the generator goes to about 200 VAC and destroys anything with an electronic switching, like microwave and any wireless appliance. The high voltage goes right thru an electronic switch and burns our the appliance. An AVR is not a fool proof device to control voltage when it fails. The KillAVolt shuts the engine down in a microsecond. It has a test button on the front of it to confirm its operation after installation. A green light to show it is operating when the genny is running. A plug thru for continued use of the outlet. It will also sense a 240v failure since it is only made of the the two 120v field windings anyway.

Wow, Earl, not all of us users are independently wealthy!! $40 for the KillAVolt with Free shipping seems like a much better deal. Gosh, the installation is under 5 minutes . My wife could put it in place.

Sure but what will it do for shore power? My money status is none of your concern and has no place here.

I have a question superbman. I just noticed in your first post that you have just received and installed the KillAVolt. How do you know for a fact that this device will really work? You might have gotten "took." Looked at the website for supergenproducts, and it looks kind of amateurish. I realize you are excited about what appears to be a new product, but it might not be all it's cracked up to be.

I think I might have to wait awhile and see what other people are saying.

Since I've had problems with low voltage before, and I don't have a generator, I'll go with Earl's suggestion. But it's going to hurt a little. My company just gave us all a small mid-year bonus. to some of that.

hmmm.... I have a birthday in a couple of months. Ok, it's to DWs money. Twisted Evil

I think I'm being received with some harsh tongue, Earl! Its your choice to buy anything and everything you want. My only concern is really what i get with my money. For the record, i received the information on the Killavolt from a friend that read an extensive article on the rv.net website. Im sure you can search on that site for more information. Have a good evening. Gotta go with my DW to the BIL house. Hope i never get struck by lightning! Twice!

I would prefer to have the one Earl listed. You just plug it in line from shore power to Cat. I'd also get the lock box that covers the connection from Cat plug to SurgeGuard.

One of these:

Bill.......I would be very leery of installing one of these "inside" the coach.........have you ever seen a picture of one that got "smoked"? They catch FIRE and melt........no way would I have it inside, but like others, the external model, which plugs in at the Power Ped or any other shore power point would be fine... I agree, quite a bit of cash to layout for something that "might" never be needed, but then again.............nope, I havent picked one up yet, and havent had a problem in over +45 years of RVing, but that doesnt mean it will never get me either. On this last trip we just made, of over 7500 miles here within the US, I saw some pretty flaky electrical installations, and sorta 'cringed' when I plugged it, waiting for smoke to arise...

Mine saved my a/c last year. The surge protector tripped when I would turn the a/c on. I found the voltage was too low. So I turned my WH and refer on gas and the voltage was enough to run the a/c. Had I not had the surge protector I probably would of fried my a/c due to the low voltage.
