never lube axles

Post by linemanhd on 7/12/2011, 12:44 am

Put new tires on cat yesterday and noticed that while putting tire on that i had a little movement up and down on one of the hub assembly.Check them at the beginning of season and they where fine. Its a 2009 32qbss with around 3000 miles and 6000lb Lippert axles.Have read about some problems with the never lube axles but having hard time finding any good info. The movement is very minor, but is there where the other 3 have none at all.Can i just try to snug up on the nut?

If you have the sealed bearing system I would be concerned and start looking into replacing the bearings. Here is the link on the forum where we have been talking about these bearings. By the way, I had a bearing failure and my trailer is only 14 months old and only has 2600 miles on it, Lippert sent two new axles for my trailer, it is in the shop being repaired right now.

Are you sure you have 6000lb axles?
Have you crawled underneath and looked at the information provided on the axle itself?

The discontunued axles that I'm aware of are rated 5200lb and have the sealed bearing system. LCI/SBS.

If you do indeed have the faulty axles there is no adjustment on the nut like a regular axle. Its a nylock style nut that simply bottoms out when tightened. Lippert billed it as a "preset bearing adjustment to reduce human error." The real error was bad engineering and cheap chinese bearings.

I guess its possible they didn't tighten the nut correctly from the factory but more likely the bearing is starting to fail on these discontinued axles.

The bearing number is JRM4249/JRM 4210XD Our local auto parts store was able to cross reference the bearing number and had three different quality replacement bearings in stock. I was not about to put another "made in china" bearing back in mine. Unbelievable low quality as compared to the other two bearings.

Still in shock that they are sending new stuff at no charge. .Mountainman they are the 6000lb axle with the sb system .Wildcatgps thanks for saying that they were replacing yours figured i would call and see what they say and worked out .Thanks for the help guys.

Are they covering the labor cost as well?

The shop that is replacing my axles is charging two hours labor. Still better than having to buy new axles.

I'm doing my own. Its a fairly easy job if you have the proper tools and place to do it.

Still doesn't exactly make me happy to be changing out axles on a new camper.
