freezer wee?

Post by NorCalCat on 7/11/2011, 6:02 pm

After our first trip a few weeks ago I was emptying out the freezer and noted that a yellowish liquid had pooled on the bottom of the freezer. I figured that the DW had something in the freezer that had leaked, so I cleaned it up- no big deal.

We took our second trip this weekend and all that I had in the freezer was two bags of store bought ice. I turned off the propane for the one hour drive home. When I got home I opened the freezer to remove the ice and saw the same yellow liquid had appeared, coming from the bottom of the right side interior freezer panel (as you are looking into the freezer). There was about 2 ounces of liquid. This mess easily wiped up, but was definitely not from any contents placed in the freezer or from defrosting, it was very yellow.

Any thoughts? And no, I don't have a cat or dog capable of doing it, and there was no discernible odor to the liquid!

First thought is your freezer compartment is sealed well and condensation formed on the outside. I'm thinking it may have leaked back to the inside and the yellow color is from the insulation.

I also vote for the insulation making the color. I would think that the freezer should be sealed better and not have an area in the back corner where water can leak back in??

Seems to me no liquid should be pooling inside your freezer. We've never had that problem. Can you detect a tiny crack somewhere?

No cracks, just the very thin gap between the interior side panel and the freezer bottom where the liquid comes from.

I have thought it is some sort of condensation going through the insulation as well, but figured that somebody here must have already dealt with this...

Is it a Dometic? Maybe they have a recall that would cover this problem.

It is a Dometic. As a second hand owner I've been meaning to check their website to see if mine fit a prior recall. But this just seemed a little too odd.

That prior recall was for a problem with the gas flame melting a pipe.

Yes Dan. I thought there might have been another recall that we hadn't heard of yet.

Thanks, Tater. I checked the Dometic website and my fridge is listed, with a specific indicator of a problem being "Yellow residue at the back or sides of the refrigerator." I tried to post a pic, but failed. But thanks anyway.
