Replacing the converter

Replacing the converter
Well I have to replace my converter today (mine died last weekend). Four wires, how hard can that be? I think even I can do this with my limited skills lol. Stay tuned, I'm sure I will need advise on something along the way today. If the cover is any indication of what is to come I may be in trouble. Torx screws....who uses these things anyway? sheesh. I will update later.

Re: Replacing the converter
Well that went very smooth. Sorry no pictures. I bought the same model that was already in there so everything matched up perfect. Only one trip to the hardware store for a roll of electrical tape ( I know I have some, but couldn't find it). I had downloaded a troubleshooting chart to find out that the unit was bad. So I used it to check for power once the new unit was installed. Everything seems to be fine, but the fan isn't coming on. Does that only come on when the unit gets hot?

Re: Replacing the converter
Good job. I believe that someone here replaced the converter and put a round vent in one side of the converter cabinet to provide extra ventilation. Might be a good idea if you still have the cabinet open.

Mine is mounted in the rear in a magazine/cab/lamp stand. They but a vent in mine from the beginning. Thank goodness they did.

Re: Replacing the converter
Ours is vented on one side. The vent that this other person put in was on the other side - to provide cross-ventilation - which is a good idea.

I do not have room for another vent on mine. I wonder where they put it?

Re: Replacing the converter
Your west coast 30rlbs must not be like the east coast 29rlbs. Is the converter between the two chairs at the back end? The circuit breakers are on one side, magazine rack in the front, and an electric outlet and phone jack on the other side? There is a big space on that side in ours where a vent would easily fit. It's just a hole in the cabinet with a vent cover. I could try to find a picture of the mod, I think the person who did it posted one.

Re: Replacing the converter
It was ScottZ who did this mod. He wasn't replacing his converter, he put an autoformer in the cabinet next to the converter/breakers. He installed a power vent, and there was enough room for all.

Mine is the same, fan behind it but I do not think I have room for 2 vents as your post seems to indicate.

Re: Replacing the converter
Well we are in Brewster (on Cape Cod) and have had no problems for the last couple days. Battery is holding a full charge so the converter was definitely the problem.

I also had to replace the converter; had two of the OEM's fail; put in a different model. I put a autoformer and a surge guard in the cabinat. I'll see if I can find the post.

Link to autoformer & surgeguard install
Converter that I installed
I have not put a compartment fan in yet; not necessary so far. The fan on my converter is temperature controlled; it does not run all the time.
