AC & Heater issue

Post by Laytonroot on 7/7/2011, 9:00 pm

When on electric power, my AC and heater both come on together. It doesn't happen on battery (obviously due to the fact the AC doesn't run on battery but the heater does) Anyone have this issue/solution?

I have not had this problem but the first place I would investigate is the control/thermostat. It sounds like the switch from Heat to Cool (or the wiring to it) might have a problem.

Do you have the OEM thermostat or did you upgrade to a house type?

Sounds dangerous. I'm sure Mike is right - it's either the thermostat itself or the wiring. Probably wires not taped properly and touching each other.

welcome to the Forum. I agree with the above posts. Sounds like a bad thermostat or mixed up wiring. I'd lean more to the wiring.

welcome Laytonroot. I wish I could help, but I know just enough to just turn mine on and off. As seen above, there are several members on this site that can help. Again, welcome to the forum.

Has this always happened or is this something that has developed over time?

Is it just the heater blower, or does the furnace actually light up when it comes on?

AC & Heater Issue

Post by Laytonroot on 7/8/2011, 10:22 am

Thanks for all the welcomes!!! What a great site.
Specktout - we have the OEM thermostat - possibly time to replace? Also - the heater does light up and blows hot air from the floor vents while the AC is attempting to cool - very weird.
BobnPi - this just happened the past few months - it worked the first two years we had it.
Ironically, my husband is an HVAC (Commercial) tech - and has checked the thermostat and didn't see any problems, possibly we just need to replace it? Any recommendations if we decide to replace (we don't know RV thermostats - are they different than home/commercial types) ? Thanks again for the all the replies and welcomes! Wink

Hunter 42999 I think it is. Do not use a Honeywell.

Possible short in the low voltage wiring.

If you use a regular thermostat I would use one that can be adjustable with the temperature differential.
when you use a standard house type thermostat just don't use the 7.5 volt wire in OEM thermostat that is used for the heat anticipator resistor. Digital thermostat don't use it.

also welcome to the forum.

That is why I would stay away from Honeywell.

They have a plus minus 1 with no change. The 42999B by Hunter has a plus minus 3 with other changes. My Honeywell will be replaced soon. I like the way they make my model and it is the only one in the market I can find so far that is made that way but I have to change to Hunter..

So the hunter has to change 3 degrees before it will turn the A/C on? And the Honeywell only 1?

Yes. The Hunter will do 1, 2, or 3. So far what I have seen in the different posts is 3 is your best bet.
