Water heater element help.

Post by Tracker16 on 7/4/2011, 9:17 am

Ok guys....like a dummy I left the heating element on on the water heater without water in it. Well....You guessed it,KAPUT AwwMan The old one is 1440 watts and the new one I got is 2000watts.My question is,is it ok to use the 2000watt or is there something I need to do to use the larger wattage? And one more thing...I am no Electrician here. It does not specify if the wires go on a certain screw, does it matter?

12 amps vs 17 amps I think your wiring is around 20 max so you would be running close I'm not sure what circut breaker they used on yours but could cause problems. By the way to figure out amps just divide the watts by the voltage and you will be pretty close to the amp draw. also doesn't matter what screw.

The circuit breaker for my WH is 15. Kinda curious. Was the 1440 not available.

I have used elements from Lowes, could also fine them at Home Depot. Just match the length and the watts. They are alot cheaper than the camping stores.. Just a thought for next time..
